Yes, turn it on and shake it down....it should read 00 or something like that.....coat the tip and a little further up with KY Jelly and insert just the top and a little above.....it should beep when it's finished reading the correct temp. Remember the temp when staying down consistently for 12 hours is a good indication that whelping time is near.....it fluxuates up and down until then. Be concerned if it goes below 97......contact your vet, if that should happen
