I just had to introduce a rescue border collie into my household dominated by my territorial yorkies.
This is what I did. I took them all outside in the backyard. Took the border collie into the house and go ther adjusted to it. Then i took my sweetest yorkie in the pack and intoduce him to the border collie when he was sitting on my lab. (Keep in mind-it was important that the border collie was in the house already before I took my first dog in).
After he was settled, I put him the room and did the same thing with my second dog. etc..
After individual intro. I introduce them once again taking them out of my bedroom one by one but this time I let them just roam in the living room with my border collie. I didn't correct my Alpha female when she snap at the border collie but I did praise her for sniffing and being nice. Of course some less dominate yorkie left the room(which was okay and I didn't say anything or force it to socialize with this new dog)
It has been 1 week now and they are all comfortable being together in 1 room. Sometime my alpha female will still put this border collie in her place but that is okay.
BTW, I still crate the border collie when I'm not at home watching them. Still don't trust them being alone by themselves. |
