Gumwood Kennel?

Does anyone have any experience or comments on Gumwood Kennel in Alvarado, Texas?

Many, many :redf lag:...as in 7 at my count from their site alone.


I don't like their spiel on "teacups" they clarify they are just descriptive terms and blah blah then go on to talk about breeding dams and males undersized yet AKC registered to produce small pups...they also say there is not difference in health concerns-completely untrue......I can't fathom that they show and seem to be reputable in that area an dare endorsing such information on their own site...you should ask some show people...everything I posted here is from their site and it's information I can see.

They endorse known junk food...especially not good for Yorkies-and their "premium food is not even close to premium and know to be problematic for Yorkies and Maltese also.

They have a load of misinformation and furthermore focus more on payments than adoption screening-they also just seem to copy/paste information from other sites...

I say stay FAR, FAR away from them. I had a freind who got one from her and it was sick.

Stay far away...........Gumwood is well known in North Texas for not being so reputable and producing horrible quality dogs...

Stay away from any site that has a celebrity page. Celebrities aren't known for knowing how to choose a breeder. Yorkshire Terriers and Maltese Puppies for sale Texas

I was so sad to hear of Vicky's passing.

Just my two cents...I got my two babies from her about 5.5 years ago and they are some of the healthiest Yorkies I know (I know alot being a former groomer). I interviewed 10 or so breeders (or so called breeders in some cases) in my area and she was who I ended up with. All I can say is that when making a decision on breeders do your research and ultimately trust your gut (don't just look at the cuteness factor). Only you can educate yourself on what is best. Just my thoughts and not meant to ruffle feathers. I hope you have great success in whomever you choose.

This is out of date, but I just noticed the post about Gumwood Kennels. I bought my sweet, healthy Yorkie from Vickie shortly before Vickie died. Except for having to remove her baby teeth, my 3-1/2 pound Yorkie has been extremely healthy. I didn't get her (Pebbles) to show, but as a companion. She arrived to me from Texas at about 3 months old and already extremely well socialized. We went to puppy classes and I was encouraged to use her as a therapy dog since she adores people. To date I've had at least a dozen people ask for the name of the breeder since not only is Pebbles the cutest of cute, but so very friendly and gentle. Her mission in life is to please, which she does in abundance. If I wanted a Bam-Bam for Pebbles, I would definitely look at Gumwood first. To continue the story of Pebbles, I had first purchased a dog from Louisiana. That breeder sent my dog to Florida by mistake. Without telling me, she was having the dog shipped back to Louisiana and intended to then fly her to me in Virginia. It is my opinion that 48 hours of flying for a 2 pound dog is criminal. As luck would have it, I discovered the issue which the breeder attempted to keep a secret, and found that the person in Florida liked my choice better than hers, (my choice was triple the cost of hers) so she kept my dog and didn't return it to Louisiana. I was offered another by the breeder, but declined. After this experience I was much more careful and found Gumwood Kennels wonderful. I would hope that the family has continued with the high standards Vickie had when she was living.

When I was there years back, the complex was back off the road in a private type wooded area and you could hear an army of dogs from somewhere away from the house where the lady, Vicki, lived. There was outbuildings and other shapes you could make out in the dark(was only there at night) and you could tell from the din that many, many dogs lived on those premises somewhere but I never saw any in the house except the puppies I was viewing or a parent or two. The lady, Vicki, could show you many toy dog puppies per visit or if you called asking about her ad in the newspaper, from Yorkies, Maltese, Chi's and so forth. Mixes? No problem. When you asked to see the parents, if they were on premises, they were apparently brought from afar and one at a time and one could tell they were retrieved from those outbuildings more than likely from the time it took. The dogs tended to have poor-to-good conformation but the Yorkies, Maltese & Chi's often had very cutesy, flattened faces and the doll-faced look - even the Yorkies back then. It looked like even then the very juvenile-looking dog was beginning to be in vogue. You were not permitted to see the "facilities" back then - a huge red flag I now know. There were almost constant ads in the newspaper for various breeds - all toys or toy mixes as I recall. I did not personally ever see any dogs that looked sick or ill the time or two I was there but then I only saw the dogs chosen and presented by the owner and represented as the parent(s) of the puppy(ies) shown. I would say by all accounts it satisfied most criteria for a puppymill, though I never got to see where or how all those dogs were kept and lived their lives.
