| Yikes! My 'NEW' Sewing Machine! I really need to stay off of Ebay, lol! Well, this is it... an 1850 something Wheeler & Wilson Lockstitch Sewing Machine, model 1, 2, or 5. Can't quite tell till I get it cleaned up some. Right now it's a pile of rust. But it moves! (Amazing what a little lubrication can do!) I decided to take a few pics after I had taken it apart... duh! More to follow when I put it back together and sew on it! The clothes pin in the pic is for size... I couldn't find a quarter... | Maybe this will help: IMG_1407-003.JPG Glass presser feet! How cool is that???? so you can see what you're sewing! Plus, it sews sideways (that should be fun!) The fabric moves from right to left instead of front to back. Bobbin winder: stick the bobbin on and hold the thread with your hand! Lol!

| yikes is right, do you plan on trying to use it or do you like to display the old machines. Give me a shinny plastic one that comes with an instructional DVD and I am happy, your project would give me hot flashes. Good Luck I am sure you will make it look beautiful

The company, Wheeler & Wilson, did very well, then was purchased by Singer in 1905.

| WOW! I'm impressed with your knowledge of those old machines. I have my grandmothers old White treadle with a leather strap to run the treadle. No one in the family is interested in it. It is in a wooden table and all. Never found anyone who knew about them. It is easily a 100 years old. My grandmother had 3 sets of twins about a year apart. She sewed for those six boys for years. Live in the middle of North Dakota on a dance with no clothing stores around. She probably made her own clothes to. Once when I was a k id her heard her talk about making her own knickers!

White machines are some of the prettiest ones made! You should post a pic of it. If it hasn't been used in a while, grab some WD40 and clean all the old lubricant off. It won't take the decals off if you're gentle, it will cut through the grime. You can use it on the wood too. Squirt her down and leave her sit for a day or two (use newspapers and/or peepads underneath, on the floor and one on the dust cover under the machine)head to catch the drips. Then squirt some more and sit down and practice treadling. Remove the thread and bobbin/shuttle. Squirt anything that makes noise or feels tight. Hit the treadle irons too at the points of friction. If you have the manual, read up on it... if not, I'll give you a link to a free one online... just give me the model and/or serial number. You'll be up and sewing in a week or less!
