| Embroidery machine vs. Embroidery/Sewing machine I have decided that I really enjoy sewing and would one day like to make creations for other people as well. I purchased just a basic sewing machine when I got started a couple months ago. I'm now thinking that I want an embroidery machine as well. My question is do you think I should get just a machine that does embroidery or a combine machine that does both embroidery and sewing since I have only a basic machine? |

| I think that depends on how much money you have to spend, and how much room you have. If your machine now is a cheap try out model, you might do better getting a combo, and that would give you a better machine for straight sewing plus the option of doing embroidery.

| Good topic. I was also wondering about that myself. I may want to invest in an embroidery machine some time down the line. Are they relatively more expensive than a high end sewing machine? |

| they can be very expensive.....i saw some upwards of 1000 bucks not onsale. of course there are less expensive versions but it makes me wonder how well they would work. im not well versed on them so i would need to do lots of research before committing i guess.

| I went looking at embroidery machines at a local Brother dealer and the sales lady took me straight to the top of the line machines. The one she showed me was $5000. Once she saw the look on my face she took me to the cheaper ones LOL. The cheaper one was still 1500. I just could not afford that nor justify that kind of expense. I ended up getting a Singer Futura on HSN for 799 that is a combo machine and I love it. It sews beautifully and very easy to embroider. I will say that I'm still working on getting the embroidery part down. I'm still learning about stabilizers, centering items and how to use the software. Also, the machine came with all kinds of software and Singer machines support several file formats -- not like Brother which you have to get Brother-specific files (embroidery fonts and pictures). Now, I'm not knocking Brother at all because my first sewing machine is a Brother and I use it as my travel machine for class because it is a great machine. I just felt the Singer deal worked for me at the time, and I love HSN. Returns are easy and they offer easy pay on just about everything. |

| Seems the big difference with embroidery machines is internet capability... the more expensive ones all have it. With the combos, some have it, the cheaper ones don't. Also the number of fonts supplied with the machines that don't have internet would be a consideration. And the size of the embroidery area. Cheaper machines only do a 4X4 inch area... the better machines do 5X7. Design editing is nice too. Some come with designs too. Here's the ones I'm looking at: Amazon.com: Brother SE400 Computerized Embroidery... Amazon.com: Brother LB6800PRW Project Runway... They both have computer connectivity and 5 monogram fonts. This one has no connectivity but it does have 600 stitches! Amazon.com: SINGER 9960 Quantum Stylist... Amazon.com: Brother PE770 Embroidery Machine with...

| Here are the ones that I have been looking at. I too can't see spending a whole lot on a machine. I looked at the Singer machines but the ratings don't seem to be as good as the Brother. | I have the Brother PE770 machine. I love it. I'm still learning though. What I was interested in was the capability of using a 12x5 hoop. I haven't figured it out but I was able to get additional size hoops on ebay for $99.99. A pocket size one, 4x4, 5x7, and the 12x5. There were a couple other things that came with too. |

| I have 3 of these things sitting in my basement and I haven't touched any of them in months. One is a Janome Memory Craft 11000. Nice machine, small hoop size though, but I've never had any problem with it in the nearly 8 years I've owned it. Another is the Quattro 6000D. Nice machine and I really like it. File transfer is easy and it produces a god quality design. Then I have a Brother PR600 II that I've had for 2 years. If you're looking to do embroidery only, you cannot go wrong with this machine. Load your first 6 colors, hit start and come back later. I REALLY need to get back into my sewing room. I'm sure the cobwebs have taken over. |

| Oh, I would love to have an embroidery machine, even though I just play around with sewing. The one I would love to have is a Janome..but can't see that happening for awhile. I think when I get one, it would be a combination embroidery/sewing, like Kathy said to save space. I wish there was a retailer closer than an hour from me. I can't seem to find the time to go check them out. Well, prehaps I'm lucky there isn't on near me, LOL

| I started out with a Brother embroidery only but returned it and got my Janome 300e. I like the hoop size better and it seems more user friendly- speaking for myself only. If you have a sewing machine dealer nearby go and ask for demos, use several different machines yourself and don't forget the used machines. I always head over to the used wall when I go into my fave store, the machines are reconditioned, come with a warranty and are way cheaper than their new counterparts. One of my flights of fancy is to walk down the line and try to imagine what was made on each one! |

I have a designer one by viking. I think they bought Janome because the machines are very similar. The top of the line is not cheap. Mine is 10 years old and going strong.. I do have a major problem with tension and one day will get it repaired I just adjust manually now. I can not "set it and leave" when doing emboridery but I will say it is an amazing sewing machine and does quilting very well. I do want a newer model... but that isn't happening anytime soon.
