Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Seamstresses: Probably A Silly Question... Hey guys! Well I am attempting Katie Scarlett's second dress today. As you know, the first one was not so good. LOL. But I refuse to be defeated. I am cutting out the pieces for the second go right now. Anyways, I have a question. Probably a dumb one, but I didn't know. I bought a tracing wheel and tracing paper for when it comes time to do my marking. I also have one of those disappearing ink pens on hand. So my question is...if I wanted to use the pen, how exactly does that work? I mean, I know the ink will wash off/disapper, but how does the marking work? Do I mark directly on top of the tissue paper and it will transfer through onto my fabric or what? I know that is silly, but I am unsure. Thanks for helping this airhead out! Tee hee!

| This is no help, because I simply do not remember...I recall the tracing wheel, and some of Home Ec 1970ish......but no marking pen..I would not think you mark on the paper though....What I do now, is mark on the fabric around the pattern, with a Sharpie pen...

| The marking pen I use is for marking directly onto fabric and disappears when it gets wet. Read the package, because some will heat set and won't wash/rinse out if you press them with a hot iron. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Im pretty sure that the tracking paper is for when you use the wheel. The Pen in for marking your darts/whatever directly on the fabric. Both will wash out, but like mky said read the directions for heat setting. But again its been over 25yrs since I took sewing class. Things have sure changed with all this new technology.

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Cool! Thanks guys! I was wondering. I ended up just using the wheel thingie and tracing paper. I finished the dress a bit ago. I'm about to upload pix. It is better, but still not perfect. But at least this one is wearable! LOL

| When using a tracing wheel and paper or a washable pen mark the WRONG side of the fabric. I learned to sew in an old fashioned way and just use straight pens to do my marking with. Less to keep around, doesnt leave a mark. I have used a #2 pencil or writhing pen on the wrong side of fabric, but only if it will never be seen (inside a dart, line for a buttonhole that will be cut open later). Looking forward to seeing your next dress. |

| I haven't follow patterns much... I tend to just eyeball it and say, "I think that ought to get it..." LoL But best I recall, lay your tracing paper on top of the fabric, then the pattern, and then use the tracing wheel. The pen does come in handy for just little marks or reminders you want to put on there, or for drawing cut lines if you want to shorten something.

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Thanks guys for all of your help! I am about to attempt dress #3. Shawna...I bought all of my patterns either online or at local stores. If you have a Hobby Lobby near you, keep an eye on the sale paper. They put their Simplicity patterns on sale for 99 cents each every now and then. I stocked up then. I also have bought patterns at Joann Fabrics and Hancock Fabrics. I purchased an Out of Print pattern on Etsy. You can also go to the pattern brand websites and look. I have visited Simplicity and McCall website many times. You can also buy patterns online that you download and print out. I haven't tried that though. Good luck to you!

| I do it the old fashion way.. I draw with a pencil on the wrong side and sew a long the line you'll never see it as it will wash off. The napkin dress I used a regular pen and drew on it when I sewed it you couldn't see it. I do, do a double sided bodist of it's really depends on how you do it. Good luck..
