| I bred sophie, and I will NEVER breed again!!! this turned into the most horrible breeding experience I ever had!!! I want another female yorkie, so I bought a male, just for breeding rights, then I placed him in a home with a friend, on a neuter contract. Well, I wanted a female and I wanted pick of the litter so I thought the only way to get that was to breed my own female. So, the pregnancy goes well and she is doing great. Then June 19th all aspects of what I have ever learned of whelping came into place. THANK GOD I WORK AT A VETS OFFICE. He gave me his personal cell phone number to guide me, If i needed help. I have whelped 7 litters ( not with sophie ) just in my life, besides assisting at the vets. I have never lost a puppy, Until now.

| my story on why I will never Breed again I came home from work on June 19th. Sophie had been in her room with food water and whelping box for the past week while I was at work. I came into the room and noticed that she dropped considerably. Then, I heard the puppies crying. One boy and ONe girl. Then homes the horrible part. She was in labor from like 430 to 8 with the third one, then I noticed not only was this puppy coming feet first (breech) it was horribly deformed. Then I realized that she was having a dry birth, the puppy was being born without a sac. I dont know if it just didnt have one or if she ruptured it somehow trying to labor with this one for so long. So after letting her try to push on her own to no avail, I stepped in to assist. With each puppy I helped pull. She did not like this one bit, but i knew from being a vet assistant that if she didnt birth this puppy soon, I would lose her too. I knew at this point there was no way the puppy was alive. I mean even if it wasnt deformed like it was, it was suffocated by now. So after pulling the puppy, it was huge like 3 times the size of the other two. Both the first boy and girl were 4oz. Then came the runt. The tiniest most perfect thing i have ever seen. 2oz. tiny!!!! Sophie decided that with all the stress and everything, that she didnt want to be a mother. I have never heard newborn puppies cry like this. They were so cold, they were so hungry. So I decided FINE I AM NOT GOING TO JUST SIT HERE AND LET THESE PUPPIES DIE. So I stepped in. I warmed the whelping box by putting a heating pad under the whelping box. I started supplemental feeding with them. I tried to hard. I lost the runt on the second day. She was so dehydrated from birth. She had such a rough start. I was massaging and doing the gravatational swing just to get her to breathe in the begining. It was so sad. I wanted her to hang on so bad. So, I lost two out of four puppies. Never in my years of whelping have I lost a puppy. It was devestating. I now have two puppies. One boy and ONe girl. I wasnt going to keep any but I am soo attached to the little girl. I wish I could keep them both, they are such fighters. Their eyes are now open and they are little rollie pollies. Sophie is feeding them on her own, but it took a lot of paitence and coaching her on my part to do so. Breeding is not for the weak hearted. Breeding is not something that you should do without education. If I did not work in a vets office I probably would of lost not only my puppies, but my momma.

| litter I am happy to hear you have two healthy pups..the rest is just a day in the life of a breeder. I always tell people who work, they must have someone check on the bitch several times per day, if you can not take her to work with you. Not making light of your situation, just saying it is quite a normal turn of events from time to time...you are blessed they all came out and a section was not needed for the oversized pup. Best wishes Last edited by YorkieRose; 07-07-2007 at 02:25 PM. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Oh man that's so sad - I was holding my breath while reading and am so sorry you lost 2 puppies... How is mommy doing now ? That post was such a good example of WHY only people who know what they're doing should breed...I have a terrible feeling this happens way more than we'd like to think with even worse endings & You're right - it's NOT for the faint hearted. I only Helped with my neighbors dog once and that was enough for me - I would be so stressed going thru something you just described. good luck with mom and babies... |

| Newmommy - I am so glad that your mama and her two pups are doing okay. Whelping a yorkie is much different than your other breeds and a lot more involved. It is not simple. I am so sorry you had such a hard time. I never leave my female about ready to whelp alone. If I cannot take her to work that week she is due, I make arrangements with my vet and drop her off there on my way to work and then pick her up on my way home. She also sleeps right next to me at night. I also call at lunch time and they have my two numbers plus my husband's numbers too, just in case. P.S. I usually try to take off from work during and near her due date. I also always assist her in whelping. I think because they are small they get tired so fast and so I do not trust her to do it on her own, especially a mom that is her 1st time whelping. I always do the cutting of cords and rub pups. This was after I had one mom cut the cord way too short and lost a pup from this. I also always have a heating pad or hot water bottle to warm the whelping box (I use an airling kennel bottom to use for whelping area then move pups and mom to their nursery bed after birthing). This way it is nice and warm. I have also found over the years that a warm area (not too warm though) helps to clear the lungs if any mucus still remains. I also check all the time to make sure all pups are nursing well and have a good suction. I have only had to tube feed one litter in all my years and so glad. I just thought I would place some of the things I have learned about whelping here for others that may read - to help. I know how hard this experience was for you, but now you can enjoy your babies. Keep us up on their progress. T. Last edited by topknot; 07-08-2007 at 10:39 AM. |

I agree with you,I went and whelped a litter for a friend (maltese) It went well and I was not stressed at all she had 4 pups had to pull a couple for they all came face up (never experianced that with dogs). Then I had my own litter about 2 weeks later what a difference when it is your own it is more stressful! |

| Newmommy, I am sorry for your loss of two puppies but you are still blessed with two healthy ones and mommy. You did an awsome job helping them survive. Be proud of yourself. I don't know how the breeder's do it, the serious one's I mean. I am sure they go through some rough times from time to time as well. Bringing into the world a living breathing thing has got to be the most amazing feeling anyone can experience. Good luck with the little ones. |
