| Help with Tiffanie...PLEASE I haven't let Tif got outside around 8 pm any for a few weeks due to her being so big, well I ask her today if she wanted to go out and she jumped right out of the whelping box so I took her out front, well I noticed she wasn't walking right, her back legs seem to go in when she walks...It's hard to explain, I don't know what it is...She isn't shaking any or nothing like that, drinking lots and lots of fresh water, eating TONs of food, I'm giving her 1/2 tums in the morning and 1/2 @ night and 1 tbsp. of cottage cheese in her food around 3 pm...She gets out of the whelping box to eat and drink and potty on puppy pads but goes right back in, I'm wondering if it's because she's layin' in there to long??? I mean it's a HUGH tote with wheels, so she can sprawl out in it. Or what else could it be? Could it be due to her whelping? I know she is panting ALL the time in there with the heating pad on one side and she lays on the other side could it be to hot in there? It's 83.3 inside the room and inside the whelping box. She and the babies go to get their tail and claws done tomorrow @ the vet I'm going to ask them to watch her walk, see what they think. I'm really worried about her but can't understand what it might be, could she have some how damaged her legs while whelping? I sure hope not. Please any advise would be grateful. |

| Let us know what the vet said. It is probably due to her not getting to get around as much. She may also be alittle stiff, I mean I get that way when I just lay around too. LOL |

I know you say you are giving her tums. But it sounds like she could be having problems with eclamsia. Here is some info on it. Eclampsia Eclampsia is an acute, life-threatening disease caused by low calcium levels (hypocalcemia) in dogs and more rarely in cats. A lactating animal is especially susceptible to blood calcium depletion because of lactating. Signs of Eclampsia are most often seen 1-3 weeks after giving birth, but it can occur anytime, even while pregnant. Smaller breed dogs are at a high risk. Initial signs include restlessness and nervousness, followed by a stiff gait or wobble when walking and she may also appear disoriented. Eventually, the dog may be unable to walk and will exhibit extreme rigidity in the legs. Her body temperature may increase to over 105°F and respiration rate will increase. At this point, treatment is absolutely necessary. Seek veterinary attention immediately and prevent the puppies from nursing for a minimum of 24 hours (use a milk replacer supplement for the pups). Eclampsia can be rapidly corrected through the use of intravenous calcium supplementation. Deana Prestigeous Yorkies | |

| How is momma, wish I would of been on here last night,She very well could have eclmapsia or may be hot ,the problem with her legs may be related to eclampsia. They can get very weak and wobbley and stagger!I would ask my vet for a calcium supplement being she had that many pups. We had 6 pups also and momma did have limping on her hind legs also (but before she had the pups),my vet thought because of how the pups were laying ,After a few days she was fine. Tums did not work for me I always get the supplement from my vet, seems to work better, and she needs a good supplement with that many babies. Did she have a fever? Usually when they have eclampsia they do not drink or eat. Mine would pant when she had to go outside and when she was hungry (she has never did this with any other litter) If I am ever uncomfotable with something I always call my vet no matter what time of day or night it is,he is on call 24/7 and would rahter have me call then have a major problem and not call. I hope all is well today with her? |

| Thanks for all U're replies and I've printed them all out and have them here with us in our baby room just incase...I took Tiffanie & babies to the Vet this morning to get dew claws removed and tails docked. Vet looked @ Tif and said it may just be from her being weak from having so many puppies or being stiff...I ask her about Eclampsia and she said NO if she was going to get it then she would of done got it by now, me knowing that isn't always true (from reading post and being told this) it made me wonder...She does seem to be walking better today. I will keep a close eye on her tho. I hope she doesn't have any trouble, with her having 6 and her milk suppy going down (Has 3 teats dried up and 5 still producing milk) could she be getting it? Does the Eclampsia slow the milk production down? Keep her in U're prayers please and our newborn babies too as we are having to hand feed all 6 to help Tiffanie with her milk. I posted about that in the breeders section, didn't know where to post about it. Hugs Lee & babies |

| walking funny Hi, This may sound silly, but Tea' was walking real funny too, her 6 pups are almost 2 weeks, but I knew she was feeling fine, but those huge teats hanging under her flapping as she ran made her go sideways and then the other way, enough to make you laugh... maybe she's just not used to the extra baggage under there?? | I did get to check back in for updates, I was having computer problems and couldn't post. Glad she is doing OK. I had a friend that just raised a litter of 5 from one of my CH sires and her girl went down and fast due to eclampsia, she had to raise 5 pups by hand. It was a long process but she did a wonderful job raising them but it was a big job to do. Her girl has now been spayed. Deana Prestigeous Yorkies |

| Tiffanie is doing great as of now, she is moving around the house again and going outside, her legs still seem fine, I'm helping feed, I think they just nurse her dry whe they are on her so much, she NOW is getting out of their whelping box and laying out in her bed outside the whelping box but still in the same room more, I think it might of just been where she was in there with them 24/7, I nursed them all last night and today and then she did too and her milk seems so much more now, I also gave her some of the puppy milk (Advice of Lady Hawk!! and many thanks for that and more advice!) Tif and I are learning, U never know what may happen with each litter. I'll post weights and photos tomorrow, if I can find a few moments to, they all are gaining so that is good. Right now as I'm typing Tif is laying down outside in her bed and our babies are inside the whelping box...So she is doing what needs to be done, sometimes we humans like to jump in & help when we shouldn't...I think I worry to much, she knows what she is doing. Thanks again for everything, Hugs, Lee and Babies |
