the dad is prty big hes almost double her size not sure of the weight but a noticable double easy...they did "tie" twice that i noticed one time a lot longer than the first but they were also left alone for very long periods of time...so i guess my little man figured it out...his daddy will be very proud...haha....the reason why i wanted to bring her to get checked was bc of her being so tiny i want to make sure that she is getting the vitamins needed to be strong and healthy for hersake as well as the pups...shes not crazy about eating...is there anything i should give her??...also the vet said if she does go in to get tested during the procedure the pups may be killed...is this true?
ps thank you the site we will be visiting it shortly.

You should have her on a quality puppy food (no corn fillers, no meat by products) already because she needs the extra protein and nutrition. I also give boiled chicken breast, cottage cheese, rice whatever it takes to keep her eating. Feed her at least twice a day and as she gets bigger (and has less room for food in her stomach) start feeding small meals throughout the day (like 4 times).

I have never heard of an ultrasound causing the death of puppies.

Since she is so small and the male is twice her size, you definitely need to have an x-ray done around Day 50 whether or not you have an ultrasound done or not. It is very possible that she is going to need a C-section. The male (and his ancestors) should be the same size or smaller than the female to be as safe as possible.

With you saying she is mean and the first heat being a false pregnancy, she might have hormones out of balance. If I had a Mom that I was worried about (or a first time Mom) hurting the pups I would stay very close after the pups were born (like even sleeping next to the whelping box and checking on them all the time around the clock) until I was sure she had bonded to the pups and everything was okay. I have never had a Mom that showed any aggression towards me though.

now and xray will determine the size of the pups only?..what should i expect from that...do you recommend an ultra sound?..and at what age?...i asked the vet how to balance her hormones out and he said once she snaps out of it shes fine?...what do you honestly think of that answer?....how would i know she has bonded?...when she went through a false pregnancy she kept a toy with her that we were not allowed to go near i imagine she thought that was her pup...but she also played with it liek a toy so i hope that didnt confuse her...she wont attack me but when she went through her false regnancy she was aggresive towards me...now shes aggresive to aeveryone but me...is she just protecting me or what is it? sorry for so many ? but very worried woof woof

The x-ray is done at 51 days counting from the first tie. It shows how many, how big, and in what positions. It should not be done earlier than this because it can interfere with fetal development.

An ultrasound is done from Day 21 to 28 counting from the first tie. They place a wand on her tummy and it projects an image onto a screen. It's not very clear. You never know if you are seeing the same baby each time or a different one since you only get a small window as the wand is moved around. So you can't tell how many or birth size as accurately as with an x-ray. One advantage is that you can see the heartbeats which you can't in an x-ray.

If you have the money, do both an ultrasound and a x-ray, but if you are only going to do one - wait for the x-ray.

I know that once a dog has a false pregnancy she is more likely to have another. Only about 10% of dogs need hormone therapy after a false pregnancy so your vet is right in saying that.

Of course, I don't know your dog, but she actually sounds like she will be a good mother. Don't worry about her playing with her toy that she was treating like a baby - she'll know the difference. The only thing I would worry about is her being so small so the birthing is more traumatic or if the birth requires a C-section they sometimes don't seem to understand that the babies came from them.

You really need to do a lot of studying on breeding and whelping - there is tons of info. on the web. Here's another good site - I suggest you read every section and then go to the next site and do the same.

Some do fine after a C-section and others you have to work with a little more (wiping Mom's vaginal fluids on their heads helps). You'll just have to wait until the time comes.

The more you read, the more knowledge and confidence you will gain, and the less scared you will be and you will be able to recognize when you have a problem. Keep reading and don't stop - yes, I agree getting the vet to move in for a week would be very comforting. See if you can find a local breeder willing to help you out. It doesn't really have to be a Yorkie breeder, but someone who is familiar with toy breeds like Chihuahua, Malteses, or Pomeranians. You could even call some ads for dogs for sale in the paper. I know, if someone called me and I was available, I would go help out.

I would let her do the cleaning just by licking, other products might cause irritation. If I felt she needed to be cleaned, I would just do it gently with a warm washcloth. If she has a colored strong smelly discharge that could indicate infection, you need to take her in and let them test some of it. A dog with false pregnancies is more likely to get an infection of the uterus (pyrometra) so do keep an eye on the vaginal discharge. You can still give her a bath at this time, maybe she still has some residue from the matings on her.
