| Are you crate training, using x-pen, or tether. Pee pad or outside training. Young pups need to use the potty every couple hours, especially after naps and feeding. Never scold or spank your pup, they will not understand. You can tell them NO but only if you catch them in the act. Take them outside/pad right after nap and 15 minutes after feeding. I take my 8 week old to his potty spot every two hours. As they get holder they will be able to hold it longer. I have pen set up for night time so I don't need to get up every two hours. When he turns about 16 weeks and I wake up to a dry pee pad then I will begin to crate at night. |

| My puppy is 18 weeks and he's pretty good with using the potty pad since he tinkles every like 20 minutes but when he has to go number 2 he barks to let me know, if I don't get there fast enough he goes on his pad. I never spanked him, just praised him if I saw him going on his pad and gave him a treat, which I also do when he goes outside. The only time he has "accidents" are when he goes right next to his pad, like he'll stand on it with two paws but miss...but he tries. So yeah my recommendation is to praise a lot when they do what you want but don't scold if they don't. Just clean it up and wait for them to do it right so you can praise them. |

| My Yorkie is 8 weeks and I just brought him home yesterday. He poops and pees wherever but I keep pads nearby and put him on it when I see him about to pee or poop. Once he does it on the pad I praise him and make a big deal about it. Do you guys keep a pad in the cage at night? I read its not good for him to have one in there but when I'm asleep at night what other option is there? I'm new here. Thanks for being such knowledgeable posters. Ive learned so much just reading |

| The thing about potty training is consistency. Our Princess Sophie does well to use the pad at 18 weeks but still is not consistently using the pad to do #2. When we brought her home there didn't seem to be any type of schedule to follow for her as she peed and pooped whenever and wherever so we started to tether her. I kept her harness on during the day and with a simple walking leash, tied to my belt loop, she went with me wherever I went. She quickly got the message and is now doing much better. She has been sleeping with us for several months now and has had no accidents in bed and she has always woken us up with puppy kisses or little barks if she needs to go potty during the night. I know there are several different ways to potty train and I also know from experience that taking them to potty immediately after naps/sleeping, 15-20 minutes after eating really does work. We just had to add tethering to make some progress. It's important to never yell or hit/pat their bottoms, that's negative reinforcement and will backfire really quickly. Use lots of praise and treats and keep your eyes open. Then don't allow too much freedom. We kept Sophie in her crate except for play time and potty time for the first couple weeks or so. Good luck and be sure to post picts. We all love to see picts!!

| Thank you for your reply! Right now I'm just trying to use the little puppy pad squares. He's extremely little (less than 1 pound and has only had one round of shots so I'm terrified to take her outisde and let her on the ground. There are tons of dogs in our neighborhood. Mostly huge ones. My last yorkie who passed away years ago (Bijou) was bigger than her so I felt more comfy potty training him outside but her parents are both only 3lbs so I'm nervous about whether I should keep her puppy pad trained and take her outside just for safe play or start teaching her to go outside everytime she needs to use it. She is actually smaller than my foot. I"m new here so I'm attempting to post pics below. Lets hope they show up. Thanks everybody for your responses and help in advance. 2013-04-26224453_zpsc1e66a76.jpg 2013-04-26201903_zps40a41adb.jpg 2013-04-27002909_zps3b0ff85f.jpg |

| I'm having trouble training my 10 week ago yorkie little boy. I'm using a pee pad because he will wake up around 5-6 am needing to pee and I don't want to go outside this time of morning so I let him use the pee pad. He's good about using it, I'll have to pick him up a few times when he tries to move away from it and keep placing him on pee pad until he finally does it. He has been pooping outside if we take him out on time. He had two accidents in the house today but that was my fault. My husband really wants to stop using the potty pads but this baby will not pee outside, we can be outside for an hour and he'll wait to pee when we come inside. Am I confusing him by letting him pee inside but poop outside. Can I change this all later when he's a little bigger to just pee outside only? It's very frustrating at times, but I know he needs more time. He's just too little to let outside my himself like I did my pompom. I'm afraid one of my outside cats will kill him, so he has to be monitored outside. |

With my new puppy, he seems like he hates the crate. He will pee in the crate every time we put him in it. Even if he has recently pee'd. No matter what, he cries and cries when he is in the crate. Like I said, I've had experience crate training my pom, so I know how to crate train. There is something about this pup that this is going to be very difficult to do. It makes me think he was kept in a crate all day, even tho he's not a puppy mill puppy. But he must have been kept in a crate all day while his breeder was at work and he thinks he's suppose to void in the crate. I'm so frustrated. I have a lot of faith in this crate training, but I'm wondering maybe it's not for him. | |

As far as house breaking Alexis I have found that it is really us in the beginning we need to realize that they have to do it correctly many times in order to get it right. Consistenency is the key. I used an ex-pen set it up the elongated way and I put a bed at one end and the food and water in the middle and then a pee pad at the end. I would take Pixie out of the ex pen let play for about a hr and watch her the whole time if she started to sniff I would pick her up and put her on her on her pad and tell her go pee pee if she went I would jump up and down and say good girl you went pee pee on your pad. I would let her out of her ex pen again. If she didn't pee I would leave her in her pen until she did and then I would praise again. I did this over and over eventually I could leave the ex pen door open and she would run in and out and pee when she needed.l I would stay it took about 6 weeks for her to do this. I never scolded I only praised when she did it right. If she had an accident I would give no reaction just clean it up bc it was basically my fault for slacking in the training dept. I guess if I got too confident and didn't keep a close eye on her. It is a lot of work but in the long run you will have a house broken dog and won't have a house that smells like pee best of luck!!

| My baby pooped outside a while ago. He kept running to the back door wanting inside, but I kept picking him up putting him back in the yard and he finally pooped! I praised him and he was happy. We will get this done! |

Thank You !! Consistency is key to training, all of the house member big and small must be on board and use the same methods each and every time. Watch your pups and learn their tells. Usually pacing around in a hurry or nose pressed to the ground with several quick stops is a good way of telling when your pups needs to go out. That is when you carry them out to do their business. You must stay with them, they need praise and encoragement to get the job done and time to find the right spot. Most pups will pee right away but when it comes time for a poo they have to find just the right spot. Be sure to praise them !! Plus, getting the eating schedule down and alway, always take them out withing 10-15 mins after is a good start to a clean and accident free home. If you work on the part where you call your pup to you and ask if they need to go outside to potty. That is such an amazing tool that I cant say enough about how it works wonders.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Yay !! You have to let them know where to do their business and dont back off as you can see. It takes time and patience but very worth it.
