Yorkie Yakker | Weight Gain for New Puppies Help I finally found a puppy weight chart and it has me somewhat concerned and I would like to know if I should be concerned. I bought a postal scale, which should be simple to use, but the puppies keep moving around even thought I did a tare weight with a bowl. The puppies are one week old and range from 2.2 to 6.0 ounces. Every opportunity I try to get my littlest in the lower teats. I am giving Zoie extra calcium and plenty of food and water and whenever I look, the puppies are nursing well. How often should I weigh them and when should I be concerned about my littlest one? |

They should be steadily gaining weight (with the exception of losing a tiny bit on second day and then back up to birth weight on 3rd day). By day 10, they usually are double --at a week, a little less than double. I would take her to the vet if you are not comfortable giving a good exam. You want to check for a cleft palate. You should remove the other pups and let mom nurse this puppy alone every couple of hours. You may need to supplement with goat's milk, but I would really try to get mom's milk in her. I would also want to know how many puppies you have total. Are the others gaining weight? You should be weighing them every day. Weigh at the same time each day, about the same time from feeding. Newborn puppies will fluctuate quite a bit from a full tummy to an empty one. You probably notice how their little tummies bulge when they are full. Be worried for this little one now. Don't panic -- but it is not good for it to be so tiny after a week. Is it acting healthy? Check gums -- pink and wet? Pull up some skin and see if it goes slowly back to normal or does it sort of stay pulled up after you let go. Checking for hydration. Does it cry a lot? Does it appear to latch on well when it nurses? If otherwise healthy, hydrated and latching on, you could probably wait til Monday to see the vet. If not -- call the ER vet. They can go down quickly so, you are going to have to stay with this pup constantly until you get it in to the vet. Set your alarm and check every couple of hours as you give it private nursing time with momma dog. I'll check back to see answers to questions.

Yorkie Yakker | There are five puppies and have been Vet overseen and checked three days after birth - there are no cleft pallets and they had their dew claw removed. The birth weight was 1 to 2.3 so the two little ones have both doubled their birth weight - he weight I gave was not quite 6 days old. They are all moving around and either sleeping with all in a group or two or three close by and no one is left alone, or off by themselves. They all make movements when they sleep, grunt, and wag tails while nursing. They cry occasionally, move around and all over Zoie sometimes and make good sounds while nursing. I will follow a better schedule for weighing and keep eye on the smallest, but I also think it is me and the scale. Yes they are all gaining weight - one is almost standing up! Zoie and Zack are both just about 7 pounds each. |

| 5 is a good sized litter but not overly so. As long as mom is getting premium puppy food and a calcium supplement she should be fine. I have never had a 1 ounce newborn -- but if that was the weight at birth, and it has more than doubled now to 2.2 ounces then that is a good increase. Since she has already been seen by the vet, I would think he would have discussed the low birth weight concerns. You will just have to be extra vigilant with her. Have the Nutrical drops handy. I would still be concerned with one that tiny at a week old. Some extra private feedings would not hurt. I would put this over on the Breeder Talk forum to get mre input from the experienced breeders.

Yorkie Yakker | Thanks I will do that - I can Zoie is getting the best food and has been during her entire life and care. She gets extra goodies now which are filled with all the essentials recommended by breeders of Yorkies, and my vets, in fact our problem exiss in most likely over-pampering her right now. Here is a picture of the five at work - I think you can see from their chunky hinies (video shows profusely wagging tails and slurps) hat we should be fine. (BUT, I will be vigilant) |

Glad they are all well cared for. I did not mean to insinuate they weren't. I only recommended taking them to the vet because you had not mentioned doing that in the initial post, when you asked when to be concerned. A one ounce pup is not the norm. I still feel like it is a concern to have a pup that small and daily weigh-ins at the same time of day are important. Another consideration is accurate weights. You did mention having some concern over using the postal scale as the pups kept wiggling. They should have been weighed at the vet's office when their dew claws were removed. How did those weights compare to the ones you had taken at home the same day?

Yorkie Yakker | Apparently it was me and the scale along with timing, and no I did not weigh every day or at the same time. With the help of others, I have now figured this out and have a set schedule. On day nine, they weigh in at 7.0, 7.2, 8.3, 9.0, and 12.3. They wiggle a lot, so the scale fluctuates and there are different readings, but they are definitely gaining weight. Thank you for your help! |

| The scale can be tricky! I thought I had mine on oz and couldn't figure out why the weights were so weird only to realize it was on kg! In my defense I was pretty excited about being a grandma! |

Yorkie Yakker | My Puppy weight dilemma is resolved and was entirely my scale ignorance which I read the scale incorrectly. I am confident that after three days and same time recordings, as well knowing these guys are chunky dunks and well feeding puppies, we are weighing in as follow: Mackie (first born boy) 11.2 Mizzie (first born girl) 13.1 Lizzy (second girl) 9.0 Chewie aka Chewbaca (second boy) 9.5 Aggie (third girl) 7.7 And there is beginning to be a lot of eye movement as well as trying to stand by all of them. !!! thanks! |
