| Baby rice and weaning process I have just read an article stating to use baby rice to start the weaning process, i wrote down all the stages in my diary, to get organized, then at the end of the article, 2 people had commented that there pups had died (boxer and staffordshire bull)because of the vitamins which are added for humans not dogs. Confused and concerned now!|It also said to start weaning at 3 weeks is this not a bit early? Advice to what yorkie owners do please, My pups are day 17, so i just doing research to find the right advice early |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i am not a yorkie breeder, but i noticed no one else has responded so far so i'll add my two cents and hopefully others will follow. You may also want to post this in the breeders section. I worked in shelters and animal hospitals before. When we had puppies in the shelter that needed to be weaned we would use puppy milk and wet puppy food for a while. then would upgrade to a wet food, dry food, and water stew, if you will.

| Millies Mum, Did the mother dog die? why in the world would you even want to wean a puppy so early? 6 weeks is the earliest and I would never do that at that age. If you don't have a local reputable breeder to ask, please ask your trusted Vet! Most reputable breeders will tell you this, let the mother dog wean the puppies!!!! Puppies will need their mothers milk as long as possible to get the most protection. Also, puppies need to learn bite inhibition, and other dog behaviors which they won't if learn you don't let them nurse from their mother. Yorkies are small to begin with and I would not be weaning them on such a poor diet of rice. They are not vegans, they are carnivores. They need protein, the rice has to go through a process that breaks it down in order for the puppies to digest it. Most people don't have the knowlege or the proper chemical process to do it. cooking the rice just isn't enough process to get the nutrition to them . Reputable breeders don't let thier puppies go to a new home any earlier than 3 months! If they are trying to see if the puppy is a show quality dog, they will keep it for several months more! Where in the world did you find this article to wean a puppy at 3 weeks? Yorky puppies are truely too tiny to be selling at 6 weeks of age! Please go to your local library and get a book on raising puppies. You will get a lot of good information from a book rather than the article and your vet too! |

| Millies Mum, I am sorry, I come across as rather harsh sometimes, I don't mean to. I am not good at communicating with people. This website that you posted above, is set up in a way to be an informative website and if you go to the "about us" section you can find the website that actually is in charge of that site. It is set up by advertisers to reach consumers and it does have "expert" writers and researchers, but you have to take the info with a grain of salt because they are "targeting" certain consumers for advertisers on each website that they are in charge of. Back many years ago, many people who bred their dogs for puppies were told that 6 weeks was the age to wean them so they could give away or sell thier puppies. But since then, because of a lot of animal research in the area of animal behavior, we are being informed by animal behaviorists that the pets are better off if they are left longer with the mothers so that they can learn normal behaviors to thier species. Otherwise they do tend to be ignorant of behaviors that would otherwise be normal for a dog or cat. I'll mention biting again as an example. Puppies that are not brought up with thier own littermates and mothers, don't learn not to bite so hard. It takes along time to teach a puppy or dog not to bite if they don't have this experience. Hurt people fingers and other bodily parts are a result of this. This website means well, but it is not up to date on this kind of information and this animal behavior information for pet breeders has been around for 20 years. Most of the reputable AKC and even cat show people are following this recomended length of time for keeping their litters before selling them. Most mother dogs will do natural behaviors to wean their own puppies themselves. They get up and leave them for instance. They will also snap and bark and growl at them. They allow the puppies to eat some of their food, especially if the owner leaves enough food for the puppies to eat. They will experiment on their own and try some adult dog food. But it won't really be good for them until their little systems are ready. I bet your local library has a good book on raising a litter and I would try to get one that was published in the last few years or from the '90's onward. Something more up to date! Good luck! |

| i start letting my babies "mess' around with food when they start trying to eat their mothers food. The age is usually about 4-5 weeks. What I do is make a slurry of Gerber baby rice, karo syrup and puppy supplement. Mess is usually all they do at this stage. Then if they truly seem hungry after three or four days, I go to another slurry of wet puppy food and supplement. I use Esbalic. Keep baby wipes handy to clean faces, belly and feet when you remove the food. Then after all this, I start grinding up dry food and put it in a big flat pan where they still make a mess. i have puppy food all over the x-pen. Then I just gradually stop the grinding. I leave mama right in with them until they are eight weeks old, then I take her out during the day and put her back in at night. In just a few days, I will hear her snapping at them. This means she is trying to wean them. Hope this helps. |
