I have a 12 year old and a 13 year old. They don't get meaner. My 13 year old was always mean ...and I think she has mellowed out in her old age.

age The books say an average life span of a toy dog like a Yorkie is 12 yrs to 13 yrs. Every year after 12 is a bonus. I have had some live to 15, but most go around 14..one made it to 17. Many things factor into a long life..spay/neutering, good dental care, proper diet and exercise., genetics..just like with us humans. When an older dog gets cranky I always tell the owner to get a vet check, usually they find the dog has pain of some sort. Perhaps it is bad teeth or infection in the gums, arthritis etc.

From what I have read their life span runs from 12 - 15 yrs Also I never heard of any mean yorkies My oldest yorkie is 10 yrs and she is not mean! maybe over protective and will display jealousy when she has to share me with Sami (5 mo) But she has never been mean. Yorkies are very territorial and somewhat possessive when it comes to the one they love & are attached to other members in the yorkies family They protect, guard, and will love you unconditionaly!

I had only 1 experience with a older dog. He was a dachshund and my first dog. I had to put him down at a tender age of 15 years old. He had mellow down( a little). Had to put him down because of cancer. My oldest yorkie is 7 years old and still a little spitfire and I hope she never mellows out. My father has a yorkie (9 years old) and she hasn't slowed down either. I think why people think a dogs will begin to get meaner is because when they are older they get physical pain from being old. When my aunt Maltese mix was 17 year old she suffered from extreme pain from arthritis and would snap if you touch her the wrong way. But can you really blame her? But is not always the case. When my dachshund was suffering from cancer and I could tell he was in exteme pain the last few months of his life but he never show teeth and always wagging his tail and was always eager to be petted. It practially killed me to have to put him down but my vet held my hand and told me it was the best for him and cried with me. Okay, I'm getting sad. I'm going to stop writting now.

YT Addict | Alex will be 5 this summer. He hasn't gotten meaner as he has aged. I know he isn't as old as some of the other posters have experience with. He has mellowed out actually as he has aged. I thought that they lived between 12-14 years.

My grandfathers Yorkie Poo just passed on at the tender age of 14 years. She lives a LONG healthy life up until recent and she started to have seizures and liver and kidney problems. I feel bad because she started to suffer there in the end and he has lost his wife a few months before that. He has had 3 open heart surgeries and he only has one good lung left. The vet kept her over a week and told him she would be fine. He sent her home and the very night she got home she started to have severe seizures. They called the vet to come out to do something but before he got there, and this is at 2 am, she died a HORRIBLE death. He paid 3000.00 for a funeral for her and Kandi had a real casket, a tombstone with her piture and name and had a real service for her. He did not think of her as a dog but as his best friend and child. She had a GREAT life while she was with him and now she is in doggie heaven. My grandfather has been in the hospital 2 times since her death and we are worried her death and the loss of his wife previously is going to drive him to his death. It must be AWEFUL to lose a belooved pet. I cant imagine the feelings and though process when you lose a long time friend. Just imagine the larger breeds live less than small breeds so it would be really hard owning the big ones. I couldnt imagine having to lose 2 or 3 dogs in your lifetime. God Bless
