Default Help! I can't find a standard size yorkie in NE Ohio!

Hello everyone,

I have been searching for a standard size male yorkie with no luck. Everytime I get close, I'm told they will weigh at most 4-5lbs. My last yorkie of 14 1/2 years was a solid 7lbs and my cuddlebug. I am so shocked that the yorkie breed has been turned into teacups and females exclusively. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it so much!
The breeders I have found I have not trusted and that is the hardest part of this whole search. I am a teacher that will be off for the summer the 1st week of June. So, I have been trying to find a puppy that will be 12wks or more around that time. I will have 10wks to give him my undivided attention and train him. So, it would be ideal to find him soon!
Also, I am puppy proofing my condo and I am having no luck finding a freestanding gate that is made of mesh or a material other than wire. I don't want his paws to get caught in wire or his body to get stuck in a slated gate.

Thanks so much!

There is only one "type" of yorkie - there is no such thing as teacup or standard. They are all a toy breed dog and should weigh up to 7lb. It is hard to find the one you are looking for because you are looking for the max weight or overstandard of the breed. It happens of course, but not what people are usually breeding for.

I do know that teacup is not a type just a size reference so I guess I just want a yorkie who is not a teacup size. It seems like as Roscoe grew up all I ever saw were yorkies his size, 6-7lbs. Roscoe was not big or meaty by any means, just looked like a healthy yorkie dog all his life (and lived happily and spoiled rotten for almost 15 years).

Anyways, I still have yet to find a dog over 2-4lbs from a trustworthy breeder in the NE Ohio area.

If anyone know of any breeders, I would be so thankful.

I just have to say how refreshing it is to have someone ask for a satndard yorkie! Too many people have put the emphasis on them being TINY that some breeders have been making promises that it will be between 2-4 lbs. In reality that same puppy will likely be around 7 pounds and many time much more. Look on the AKC.org website to find reputable breeders. Then call and speak with someone from thier list and explain what you are looking for. A breeder from the AKC site will be reputable (although I am sure there are exceptions) and can help you find a breeder in your area if they don't personally have what you are looking for. It is a great starting point. Good luck

Default Thanks :)

Thanks so much for your comments and suggestions. I have been on the AKC breeder list, so I guess I will start making calls from the breeders listed there.

Hi,
I sent you a pm. We currently have 4 beautiful males available for new homes this next week or so. They will range in size from 4-7 pounds each. We do have one male who will be 6-7 pounds. He is very loving and sweet. It is refreshing to see someone looking for a male as a pet. I think boys make the nicest pets when they are neutered early. Boys Rock!!

I sent you a PM. I've placed several of my kids with YT members. I have one tiny male born April 9th. Rocky is going to stay small, I'm guessing around three pounds. Sparkie was born April 27th and I'm guessing he will grown to around 5-7 pounds. He is very dark like his daddy Dinky.

Linda--I want Rocky!!
I promise one day, I am coming to your house and getting Star. I should have got her when she was a baby!
Rocky is adorable!!! I love his dark face! You know I prefer that look, but all yorkies are amazingly adorable!

I have got a bigger yorkie myself,. i thought i had a smaller one,. but he is defenitly a standard..
I know people say that there are no minis, small or teacups or teapots.
But in the netherlands we have not alot small yorkies.
We mostly have standard size here.. mine weighs now about 8 Lbs i guess
And he is precious..

When i was in the states last oct till january i found that alot of people breed very small ones..
Sorry i cant help you... only thing i can say is that in the netherlands the average is bigger.
Love Priscilla and good luck.
