| Advise needed about showing Hi, I would love to start showing one of my babies. I have a few questions. First, I live in a very small town. They DO have a club here, but they don't seem to be too active and it seems to be geared more for herding dogs. How would I go about getting a mentor? Or is there such a thing for showing. I know I would have to travel out of town to show her ( at a minimum of about 100 miles to the closest bigger town. But before that I would really need to learn all of the ropes, such as teaching her to stack, using a lead, etc. Are there any good books to help? Anyone here who knows about mentoring? Where do I start? Thanks for your time Sonya

| showing Where do you live? There are alot of shows in southern California. I would ask for info at the local kennel club or at the vet office. If its mostly a big dog town, even the big dogs go to shows and they may know someone. Try asking at the groomer shops too. Call the closest kennel club not in your town. I also lived in a "big dog" town that was 150 miles from shows, although we did have 1 two day show per year. It was very frustrating. Most vets were clueless when it came to toy dogs also. Needless to say, I basically stopped breeding and showing. I didnt know anybody to help or any handlers either. There were no fun matches or show classes. So, I moved closer to the shows when the opportunity arose. You might also go to infodog.com or aKC.org. Hope this helps, Lynn |

| Hi Lynn I live in a little town called Ridgecrest. It is about 90 miles southeast of Bakersfield in the middle of the desert and about 90 miles northeast of Lancaster. There isn't a bigger town withing 90 miles. I have checked out both of the sites mentioned. They used to have a 2 day show here 1 time a year, but I understand this year it was cancelled. Not sure why. It is so hard to find out any information about the club here because the web site doesn't stay updated. and unless you happen to KNOW a member, I have found it hard to even find out who to talk to for any info from them. The club here is Coso Fanciers. Don't know when they meet, etc I have gone to the shows every time it is here and always felt like it was hard to even get questions answered from the people there (both the exhibitors and the vendors, etc) I am sure they are just so busy with thier own dogs, I always got the feeling they wouldn't be happy to welcome in anyone new. It is probably just me or they had other things on thier mind. The last time the show was here, (last year) we went and took Sunshine with us. (she isn't the one I would like to show) I talked to a few yorkie people and they were nice. They were admiring Sunshine and were very nice. But even asking what kind of grooming products they use, some just acted like it was a secret or something. I did talk to a really nice lady who bred yorkies for years. She fell in love with Sunshine and said she had lost her last yorkie less than a year before and was interested in a puppy if we bred her. She also told me that it would be extremely hard to start showing because it is hard to get into unless you knew someone. Not sure how true that is, but I really would like to get some info and some direction. Thanks so much Sonya
