Default Size of Bitches

Hello,
I was wondering what size of bitch does well in the ring. Not particularly speaking of a specials bitch, just a nice finishable one.

Thanks,
Karen Grande

A bitch between 5 - 7 pounds. Remember you're taking your possible breeding bitch to get the judges approval. Reputable breeder exhibitors wouldn't breed anything under 5 pounds... However, size is relative to bone structure.....so you, could have a really fine boned bitch that was just a little overweight for her size.....

Very few bitches are specialed, however the same would apply to those that are.

Remember when picking your show potential bitch show/champion and add to your breeding program....besides knowing that she comes from a line of free whelpers....a good way to measure.....if you can fit 2 fingers between her pelvic bones and 3 between her anal opening and vaginal opening....good sign she'll be a free whelper......

There was a recent article in the Yorkshire Terrier Magazine....describing a foundation bitch......some of the top breeders in the country had input to the article.

The article in the YTMagazine is a very nice one!

The girl I have kept back to show is of a finer structure and weighs right at 5 lbs.. But I have not decided if I would be able to breed her after she is done showing.. I went and watched a couple shows lately and I have noticed the larger females in our area are the ones picking up wins!

Just a thought and my opinion, if you're truely unsure of whether you want or can to breed her, why would you continue showing her and wasting your time, not to mention the money.....Just my opinion. You are asking for judges approval of your breeding stock. On the other side of that, if you're practicing (and remember this just my assumption) with her in the ring...and she's finishable......great!!!!

I have taken her out twice.. The first show she won her class and the second time she was shown a larger girl won the class.. I had several friends who are exhibitors look her over and they think she is a very nice girl and would have no problem breeding her once she is finished.. I personally like my females alittle larger with a larger bone structure.. I feel that if I have kept back a show prospect and they have truly given their all they deserve to go out there and strut their stuff.. So yes I am looking for the judges approval.. As we all know no two judges think alike and their types usually are different..

I better make up my mind she is 1 1/2 years old already!

What I shared with you was my opinion only....didn't mean any offense by it...just my opinion.

Yep! Either way...she's getting up there where you have to make up your mind.

I too like my bitches larger and more on the medium boned side. Yep! I agree, every judge has their own preference and unless a yorkie breeder judge....they really don't have a grasp on the whole yorkie standard thing. Some get hung up on ear sets, others...more on those in full coat and never looking past that.......

Size for showing has alot to do with the area also...4 to 5 seems to be what they like here in Florida..I have seen some smaller. I like 5 to 7 also...
