| Very naive beginner question Ok, please don't slam me for asking this. I am only asking because I read about it once (long ago) and have never "investigated" it to find out if it were true. Do show dogs have to be drugged (anti-depressants and the sort) in order to cope with being cooped up in kennels all the time? I read an article about how dogs that are shown on a regular basis are usually very depressed because they are not aloud to run and be dogs, for it might mess up their coat or they might strain a muscle . . . etc. . . Is this really true? Please, be honest, and please only answer if you absolutely know that your information is true, not just what you THINK is true. I really want to know. Thank you. |

| I do not exhibit or breed, but I doubt this is the case...When a dog steps into that show ring they are not being judged just for looks conforming to the breed standard but also temperment, and in a sense showmanship. A dog will not develop this if iti s drugged and caged all the time. I think there are many other things that exhibitors do to preserve the show coats such as wrapping them in rags, and using special grooming products, but it seems to me most show dogs I have met have been active and normal in their daily lives.

My dogs have the run of the family room, kitchen and backyard whether they be show dogs, finished their championships or puppies. My show dogs, once their coat reaches a certain length, have the coat wrapped in wraps. They can do and be anywhere any of my dogs that aren't currently in the rings are and join in the playing. A show dog has to be happy and healthy mentaly, physically, and emotionally. Cooping them up and drugging them is not going to give you that. They need the muscle tone and movement that can only come from being able to live like dogs. Using any sort of drugs is never considered by reputable show breeders. Any of these products can be dangerous and side effects can be a problem and are just never an option. I know many reputable show breeders of the YOrkie very well and none of them would ever consider drugging their dogs. Of course, I don't know them all. The odd ones I know of that I don't like how they keep their dogs, have pretty questionable practices all around anyway but are very few and far between just as you find with any breeders whether or not they show their dogs. | |

| Not a dumb question......but, heavens no, show dogs are not drugged. As stated before they definately need the stamina and attitude to perform and put forth that yorkie attitude in the ring. The only time mine are crated is to travel and sleep. You'll see them very quiet on the grooming table, being primped and groomed. That behavior comes with alot of training. Heck! The whole time I was showing Denny I wish I could have drugged him. He had so much energy there were times I had to do a jog to keep up with him in the ring. So many times I felt like telling the judge; look at him quick cause he doesn't stay still for very long.

| Man, I feel so much better! I wish I could remember where I got this information. Obviously it was erronious. Thank you for clearing this up. It has bothered me for so long. I wish I had asked this long ago! Again, thank you. Brenda |

| I can't begin to tell you how glad I am to "hear" this. I am literally breathing a sigh of relief. I have wanted to attend a dog show ever since I bought my Yorkies (although they are NOT show quality, unfortunately), but I have steered clear because of my own misconception. |

| Sometimes, we have a preconcieved misconceptions. If you only knew how pampered these show dogs are. Reputable breeders/exhibitor give so much time their dogs, you'd really be amazed. Their dogs sleep on satin beds, given the best of nutrition, bathed every 4 days with special products, wrapping and rewrapping at least once a day. Dried with special brushes and combs, trained and kept in tip top condition. These dogs are their love, their hearts and soul. From early morning till bed time your life revolves around the dogs. That's not to even touch vet bills, equipment cost, grooming products (each coat is different and requires a different set of grooming products)

| show dogs I have shown and been to many show kennels...just returned from visiting YT Lorraine. When dogs are kept in small pens and drugged, they do not make good show dogs..there is so much more to a show dog then a pretty coat. Does very show breeder take good care of their dogs..of course not..but neither does every pet owner? My Yorkies had lots of space and freedom...I did wrap their coats and tried to be careful that they didn't play with young pups until after they got their title..but they had playmates. Lorraine's Yorkies have run of the house, more or less..infact they have more space to she does..LOL |

| No, no, no! Infact my Pepe loves the ring and wants to always show. He has that attitude - "Look at me!!!" My dogs are never drugged. They are pampared and are in my home - free run. They actually run my house, they just let me live there. LOL And yes, dogs are highly , highly judged on their personality and temperment in the ring. What judge wouldn't love a cute, very expressive yorkie in the ring! Easy loves to go away too at shows, since she loves to stay in hotels and have barbecue! It is her favorite and she watches TV too. Really, she does. Not kidding. Each dog has their own personalities and love to show OR I would not take them to show if they truly did not enjoy it. We jsut got back from a show today and Kee loves the ring. T. |

Yes, some people don't understand what it is to be a responsible pet owner. And it's funny how clients think you're being overly protective with your puppies when you start questioning them to insure your puppies go to the right homes. They feel that you the breeder are the one that should past the test as to whether they'll buy one of your puppies. When I get the standard question: Can I come and inspect on how the puppies are raised. I always answer back, absolutely, but on one condition, if you allow me to visit your home too.
