| When you first started showing... How did you learn what to do in the ring? Or, do you hire a handler for your dog? I want to start showing and have an opportunity to do so. Plus, my 10 yr. old is really showing an interest in it as well. Are there any videos that would teach us some basics? Any recommendations?

| showing Contact local dog clubs to find out about handling classes..they are wonderful places to learn and meet people. GO to shows and watch. also, some show breeders give lessons..there several good books and CD's, but handling classes are best..you DO NOT need a show dog to take a class..you are the one who must learn first, then you train the dog..so you can take a pet..best wishes |

| Steph. They have the conformation classes in the kennel clubs. But there might be a video you can get also. The problem with that is, they don't get used to being around a lot of strange dogs, and having strange people touch them. I know you live out in the middle of nowhere, so it's hard for you to get to classes. But maybe if you just went to a few, it would help you learn what to work on and how to do it. |

Good advice! Our local kennel club offers conformation classes and jr. handling classes every week. I love to watch the jr. handlers during their class. I can just imagine them as adults and can see how much they will have to offer the dog world!

| Like Jeanie said, I'm kinda in the middle of nowhere. 1 1/2 hrs. from Omaha, 1 1/2 hrs. from KC. Plus, I have 5 kids and the youngest is 5 months. So getting away to go to a class would be extremely hard to keep up with. I have a friend that shows and has a very good dog that I could work with. I just need to learn what to do with him. She already told me that she would help me out but I thought maybe I could get some videos or something that my son and I could do together here at home. Once the kids are older, I plan on showing full time. But I've got to get started somewhere!

| Hello Fannie! I always train my showgirl at home. Just put your dog on a lead take a peace of something he likes and try to get his attention. The dog should always look at what you do, he should walk with its head high and a complete level topline. You can also train that he stands still for a while. For this you have to put him in front of you, the feet parallel to each other, the topline also level. Do you know Sweetyblue? They offer videos of dog shows here in Europe, I think itīs a little bit different to the shows in the US, but you could watch at the videos how to move and to put your dog in front of you. Just look at www.sweetyblue.com and there to the link of the videos.
