Someone who shows their dogs, finishes them as champions and then breeds the finished champs.

Post Wonderful thread!

I personally think a (reputable) show breeder consist of:

I am new to the show world, but I am very lucky to have three wonderful reputable show breeders right out my backdoor! I spent alot of time trying to learn from them to do everything right!

A (reputable) show breeder is one that does everything right by the breed! One who studies their pedigrees and the genetic defects that come in the breed.. They are (reputable) breeders that breed for the standard of the AKC breed and take their dog/dogs into the conformation ring.. They are proud of what they have produced! Their dogs are treated as members of their family and are not locked into a room or cages 24/7.. They are very picky about what they breed, they do not just throw two dogs together for a litter of puppies.. They do the proper research needed to breed a excellent litter of puppies.. They spend many many sleepless nights taking care of mamas and puppies.. They always place their pet puppies into loving homes only! They enjoy every minute in a showring spending time with their dog just having fun.. They never take out a loss in the ring on their dog!!! They never ask for a reward, this is their passion and they love every minute of it!

I can only honestly tell you about myself.. I LOVE my dogs and they are my life! My days are spent with them, they are free to roam in my home and lay where they like! I spend my days grooming them, playing with them, training them, going to the vet and most of all loving them! They are not like my children, they are my children and are always treated as a loving member of my family!

Well, I am glad to hear you say this, I know a few "reputable" show breeders who goes the extra mile also. Plus, they have pointed and just about finished their dogs in the show ring. Then, I know some who go to shows don't point and who have almost 30 dogs, and call them dog 1, and dog 2..so on and so forth! So, I guess repurable "show" breeder is in the eye of the beholder, just like broker, or breeder.

Isn't a show breeder just someone who shows dogs? I think there are reputable experienced show breeders and hobby breeders that show...but anyone can show. It doesn't mean the dogs are healthy or the breeder is ethical, it just means they show dogs?

You are exactly right there are ethical and unethical in everything.. But what I posted is what I personally think a ethical show breed is or at least my idea of one! I have been burnt by a couple of so-called show breeders..

I guess my other question is, can someone call themselves a "SHOW" breeder if they have never finished, or pointed in a show?

That's why I posted my definition. I don't consider people who go to shows or who used to show dogs "show breeders"

I think there are some breeders that produce nicer puppies than some show breeders.. I have seen many yorkies in the ring that I would classify as strictly pet quality, does that make their breeder a show breeder? Not in my book.. I myself am just a newbie to the show world, but I feel I have the potential in my dogs to produce show quality, Tizzy for example! Will she be shown, YES! I am very proud of her! I told myself in the very beginning that I would not sleep and eat the show world.. It is strictly a hobby, does that make me a bad person, NO.. I also have other things in my life that are just as important as showing my dogs.. And if need be I will hire a handler..

Melanie, I don't undrstand your particular answers to my questions. Are you saying you are just a hobby/show breeder so you aren't worried about pointing, or going to shows. I am so confused by your answers

Sure I would love to point my dog everytime I take them out.. I would love to champion my dog in a months time, does it happen no.. There are so many side to this: I consider myself as a reputable loving breeder with excellent dogs.. I consider myself new to the show world and have a beautiful dog to show! Maybe one day I will be a reputable show breeder, who knows! But my goal is to produce show quality and I feel that I have the dogs to be able to do that.. I have worked very hard to have my dogs and most of them in my eye are excellent examples of the breed.. I am very proud of what I have accomplished in my program and with time I hope it only gets better.. But I am a hobby breeder that shows, it does NOT rule my life and never will!

I personally do not know what your problem is with me, but I am done with this thread..

I wouldn't consider anyone a show breeder until they have finished (or are at least actively showing) at least one champion they've bred. It doesn't count if you buy one someone else has bred and then show it.

Thank you for point that out, c j

However, Kristy answered my question to the point..However, if someone goes to the shows every week and don't point, then why do they go..Also, if they buy dog's to show then resell them, makes them a broker who tries to buy show dogs...
