Default Question of bow colors

I am a new Yorkie owner and at our first cluster of shows I had a different color bow and lead for each day. Hot pink on Fri, red on Sat and teal on Sun.
Another exhibitor came to me on Sun and said that red and orange were the only acceptable colors and that judges would penalize for other colors. I looked at show pictures online and saw red bows 99% of the time. I will add that we won the puppy class all 3 days so bow color did not seem to matter.
What is your opinion?

IMO...the judges are not there to look at bows and leashes , they are there to look at the dogs .
My friends have different bows and leashes and they always win , if they have to .

I have never seen bow color ever mentioned in the yorkie standard.
No, it does not matter what color and you should never get penalized for having any other color. You can choose which color. Red is the most popular and does help with making the gold and dark - seem to show up better - jmo. I also try to have my lead match my bows and will even try to make sure it goes with what I plan to were in the ring. So go crazy with your colors and even designs! Besides you have a puppy and go really crazy!

P.S. I had a beautiful teal blue on one of my females I was showing once and the judge asked if it was a boy - I guess he wanted to make sure I was entered in the right class and the blue bow threw him off. But I liked it!

Default colors

Most use red or orange..but there is certainly no rules against it. I have used purple, red and white polka dots and pink alot.

I have to agree with topnot ... never seen anyone penalized for the color of bow used either.... I haven't shown in the AKC ring yet, but I have attended them and I have seen many colors used. I show IABCA with yorkies and the Biewers and with their coloring we get to have fun with the different colors. And have won with the other colors than red and orange... go figure!!!!

Default Thank you

I have always dressed to compliment my dog in the ring when showing other breeds and it makes sense to me to do that with my yorkie. I like for my lead to blend with what I wear and I would want my bow to match my lead. I agree that red looks best with the coat color but other colors look nice as well. I have had such fun buying bows. There are so many pretty ones.

Thank you all for responses.

Hi Iwolfe,
Where in NC are you located? I am interested in finding a handler or getting some help in showing. I am finding that most show breeders are not very helpful, in fact, a lot are very snobby. I have really good bloodlines and am very much interested in showing. Any help out there?

According to Joan Gordon: "Picking the color for the dog's ribbon is a matter of personal preference. But as a general rule, pastel colors (although lavendar is okay), black, brown, yellow, and white tend to fade the dogs colors, and do not show up well in the ring. Bright colors are best; red, blues, greens, or the variations of these basic colors. Young dogs, whose golds are not cleared all the way, tend to look best with red ribbon as it picks up the gold minimizing the black or sooty colors."

I am so thankful for this thread. As most of you know I plan on showing and I love Red bows but polka dots are fun I thought it was the unspoken rule Red or Orange only!!..lolol..

Thank you for your reply. That is the kind of information that I needed.

It shouldn't really make a difference but it can. Some form of orange/red is all I have ever seen in the ring on Yorkies.

Some judges will even discount you if you use any color of lead except black. Supposedly that's what you use if your a pro and know what your doing. I don't pay any mind to that hear say.

I may just one of these day even put my boy in 2 topknots and see what happens. I think they are cute that way too. LOL

Two bows look so cute. I do that at home. If Maltese can do it then why not?

Its acceptable for Yorkies too but rarely ever done. I better wait till I get a female in the ring before I try it though. My fella might feel funny being the only guy with "ponytails". LOL

I have won in the ring before with various colors of leads. If only black was the right color - then your sales people at the shows would only sell black leads and red and orange color bows, which is not the case. Last time in the ring I had one with a red bow and one in a turg. bow and a red lead and a blue lead. They both won their classes and one went on and won group.

I have tried two bows back in the 80's for a match. I have to admit it looked different - it makes their heads look different. I haven't tried it again since then.
