| Showing information I know this sounds like a really dumb question. Where would someone start if they were interested in possibly showing a Yorkie. I know absolutely nothing! I only want to research this at this time. Can someone point me in a good direction? |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Wow Okay I'll try to answer this. In my under 10 yrs experience, first you have a breeder that will entrust you with a show pup. Usually that takes some amount of time to develop those relationships. One way to start, is at a breed club, and preferably if you have a Yorkie Club in your area great, next is a toy dog club, and then third an all breed club. These breed clubs, often have courses on a number of interesting topics, and also lessons on "handling" a pup in the ring.

| Well start by researching kennel clubs. The three main ones that I know are AKC, UKC, CanKC (canadian kennel club) decide which you are most interested in and start attending events sanctioned by them and shows being held by them. Doing "fun" shows is a good way to get familiar with the ring and the process of getting ready for a show and all the time, money, commitment it takes. I would find a show quality breeder in your area to connect with who is willing to mentor you, teach you the ins and outs, co own a show dog, and possibly let you handle her/his dogs eventually when they fee you are ready. The show breeders I know will co-own the dog with the buyer until the dog has titled or earns so many points... Not sure if you pay the price for the dog upfront or once the co ownership is dropped?? I could write more but I am on my iPod and getting sore thumbs haha!

| The first thing to do is to go to shows in your area. Ok has a number of shows and there are also shows in the upper Texas area as well. Without distracting people from grooming, try to observe exhibitors getting ready for the ring. Watch the rings. Make notes in the catalogue on the placements and get an idea of the type of dog that you really like. Become familiar with the standard, everyone has their own interpretation of the standard, but the basics are still there, as you gain experience, your "vision" of the standard will evolve. Coat care and show grooming are not easy and you need a mentor to teach you. Once you have an idea of where you want to be headed with yorkies you will need to establish a relationship with a breeder that shares your vision. Over time you can build that relationship and learn from them so that you do not wind up finding out that showing is not for you. Joining a breed club is an excellent idea. You can find out about clubs in your area from the YTCA and also check the breeder referral on their site to learn about show breeders in your area. If I can help you I am happy to do so.

| Thank you all for the information. I did see that there were some shows in May. I think I will go to these and see what it is like. I just thought I would look into this. I love Yorkies and the more I learn about them the more I love them. I'm not sure if I have the right personality for showing. I not very outgoing around people I don't know. I hope with learning more I can have more confidence. |

| I couldn't tell from your original post, but do you already have a Yorkie that you would like to start showing, or are you looking to find a show breeder to purchase from? While it may be easier to buy a puppy from a show bloodline, there is nothing more rewarding than showing your own. So often I read where people almost make it sound like you can't do it unless you have a mentor by your side. It is wise to seek the help of an experienced show person for advice and instruction on things such as grooming techniques and doing a good top knot, but I don't want you to feel the Yorkie that you may have now, and were hoping to show isn't good enough. Oklahoma City is the home of Onofrio Dog Shows, and there are several good shows in the OKC area. Claremore in the Tulsa area, and Grove OK have shows in April. In May I would highly recommend the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America specialty held in OKC the 16th and 17th, followed by the Toy club shows the rest of the weekend. Last year there were 44 Yorkies entered in the Toy show! There is another show in OKC the last of June, so you should have a chance to watch and meet people. Once thing that I have found is that most of those people you see at the show would love the chance to share their knowledge with you, if you just let them know you want to learn. As for your personality, don't worry aboput it, just go out and have fun. Good luck and I really hope you do decide to show. |

Hi Thanks for the reply. No, I don't even have a Yorkie yet. Like I said I really do not have any knowledge about showing. I just assumed that I would have to purchase a show quality puppy. When you say "show your own" do you mean if I were already a breeder then show one of my own stock? I do not see myself ever having the availability to be a good breeder. Maybe that is something I could possibly see about when I retire but that would be years down the road. So maybe I should have asked first, do only breeders show? I just figured that showing came before breeding. I don't know, but I would gladly accept any info on this. I did see the YTCA show dates for Oklahoma. I really would like to attend this. The whole subject fascinates me. When I find something that interests me I really put my whole heart into it. I don't like to jump into something without being fully informed so it is very important that I really research this. I want to know that I can be successful in acomplishing my goal. Thank you so much! | |
