Default Help with issues on lead with pup...

Ok we have been to 4 of the 6 conformation classes so far and I have a problem, well my girl Sassy does.
She is just 5 months and I know she is a pup. I have been working with her and Karma now for 5 weeks. Karma is doing great and is a "natural" stacking and on the lead. Sassy on the other hand is quite a challenge. Her newest thing is to just dead stop when walking on the lead or she pushes way out to the side and puts on her back brakes. This is new since we have been working on naturally stacking after the up and back and then I give some bait to keep her attention( which she does great) but now she just stops all the time and thinks it is treat time or is downright being stubborn, putting on the breaks.
I have tried walking her along a wall, squeeky toys, kissy noises, praising, ect. The lady that runs the class says give her time. Now how do I give her time when she refuses every attempt?
Also there is a Match on Sunday I was going to take her to and it would have been our first outting. Now I do not think I should take her.
Any veterans with ideas?

I just recently went through this with Cruz. What I did was I took him and My older girl out for a walk and I used a coupler. That way I knew he would eventually realize Friday wasn't stopping just because he didn't want to go. By the end of the walk he was walking right beside her.

I will try that. I have been walking this girl daily on lead and off, then all of the sudden this started...LOL she has a sign on her for sure that says will work for food and baiting her has started that.

Thanks for posting this link Lori. Wolfie seems to be going thru being a bit fearful right now. At the show on Sunday he shivered a bit and wanted to tuck his tail... this is completely new. Hopefully it is just a short phase.

No problem. I try to be as much help as I can even though I am still fairly new and always learning. At our last puppt match Cruz refused to go near the duct tape. He got to a corner where there was lots of it and he wouldn't budge, not even for chicken. The next time at class I asked the instructor to put down a few pieces of it and he completely ignored it. So in my Opinion I think that it can be anything and everything that might scare them or intimidate them and you don't know when it's gonna happen or how long it's gonna take to get over it. Just go with the flow.

That is so her right now the little turd. She is pushing everything to the limits. When stacking she now lifts her left front leg every time...grrrr. Brat.
The instructor told me to make the table time fun, so I have been doing that with her too. She is what the instructor calls "soft" meaning you cannot correct her much as she internalizes it and gets all sulky when you do. So we do the fun fun fun games.

I wanted to take her to hers and my first match on Sunday but she walks about 5 feet and stops. Should I just forgot the match? there are only 2 a year in my area and I really wanted to get my feet wet

ps cannot wait for the second fear period....

I think you should go for it. Sure she may stop but at least you will know. Plus you have the added benefit of getting her used to sites and sounds at a dog show.

Well she did awesome at the match today and I was so proud of her. At 4 months she went up against 4 other yorkies and well placed 3rd
I have asked a few breeders and wanted a true opinion on her so I asked the Judge after the show. She told me Sassy is beautiful but her tail is way too short. I knew this going in from 2 other exhibitors telling me this but the standard is not specific so figured I would give it a go. Now at least I know this. The judge told me her good points and that her topline is perfect, her structure on the table and her coat are great. Her tail being too short is not from breeding but from improper docking...still stinks but true and not something I did not expect. I had a great time and met some wonderful people of bichons and sharpeis . The bichon took group and placed 3rd in show.. he is in the class with me so I was very happy for him and stayed for the whole show to route him on.

Topline and coat and structure are way more important than length of tail. She will look better when she grows more coat on the tail.

Well good for you. Standard says docked to a medium length, right? I agree with another poster, don't stop showing her, incorrect docked tail length is not a structural fault. When she grows up with the additional hair on tail, it may balance out a bit.

So your task now, and you've gotten some feedback, judges and other exhibitors, enhance her good points. Coat is great, then make that coat dazzle. Literally dazzle, a gleam so bright you'd need sunglasses for. I have some suggestions, if you give me a pm I'd be happy to share with you. Structure is good, then stack her to |SHOW OFF her rock solid top line, wear contrasting pants/tops to make it zing to the eye. On table when she grows more coat on tail, hold tail up about 1 or 2 inches on the hair, to give illusion of longer tail. Same on floor stack. Is her movement good? Then take longer on the down and back, show off her great side movement, you will need to work on the pacing to do that. Have friend help you by videoing you and she with different speeds. And never, ever, think you don't have a good dog. You go into that ring, you strut your stuff, and you say with your eyes, with your body language, I believe, I know I have the best dog in here.

Her "plume" as it was explained to me is quite pretty. It is about 21/2 inches long and when I stack her I "push" it up and boy is her topline straight and loins are short. But that look is lost once she is put on the floor as her little nub does not show much above her topline. I have hopes that when she matures more that the nub will grow with her and show the slightest bit more .
We got over the stubborness and she had that "show" attitude. When we came out of the ring, people came over and complemented her and her attitude. Fellow exhibitors of other breeds said she had the spunk and presence that says "look at me". Of course I am new and was nervous. I just did what I learned in class and my instructor was proud. She was judging the hounds, herders, and sporting dogs. She gave me a few pointers on how to improve me (have fun was tops) which I did but was shaking like a leaf.
I will keep going with her and see how she does. I will also be showing NAKC and maybe UKC as shows up here are far and few in between unless I travel 4 hours each way. She is just 4 months so we have time, both she and I...
Thank you for all your support and help..I sure do have the show bug now. I met a breeder of Chis at the first show I went to to watch, she is in the kennel club I just joined, and she would like me to show a male of hers. I am not sure what to do about a short haired dog Not sure if I will do it or not. I want to show but love the Yorkies...
