Tails... Can a tail be too short in the ring? I have seen many shapes and sizes of tails but how about the wee little stumps? Do they throw off the tailset or topline if too short? I have seen medium length and even somewhat longer too but wonder about the shorter tails...

Can a tail be too short in the ring? To me, absolutely. And outside the ring for that matter. The standard reads "Docked to a medium length and carried slightly higher than the level of the back" so IMO wee little stumps as you describe is too short. However medium length is left for interpretation so what exacty is "medium" and how short it too short will difffer with everybody.

Thank you very much for the response. Would you not try a potential if the tail had been docked too short? Should one just pass on that puppy?

You're welcome! Again what is too short is relative, but I wouldn't completely toss a nice dog just because of a short tail. I'd have to see the dog as a whole...It would be a negative, but if the dog was nicely structured with quality coat blue & tan color and silky texture, I could probably live with a tail too short....it's not genetic fault so if nothing else it's easily fixable (next generation) to correct and fit the standard. It's a little hard to say for sure sorry, but I wouldn't pass just on that. Are we talking wee little stumps that don't carry above the level of the back?

The stump in question is about 1 inch long so as a 4 month old pup it does show slightly but does not carry high as what I know is proper length. Sad because structure, movement, coat texture seems like will be the proper silky, personality plus, however color will take time. The skin has the bluish appearance of one that will maintain the steel blue coloring. I just have been watching this pup with interest however the tail has been a concern. True a stump of a tail is not genetic. Something to consider...thank you again for your time.

That stinks...but I would keep watching and see how he turns out as a whole. Maybe somebody else with more experience too will also weigh in...
