We have 20 entered. Always a big show in my neighborhood, since we have so many of the best here. I don't expect any points since she is so young. Competition is tough and if your yorkie is not more mature and dripping in coat - it is almost impossible to get the points. We actually see the ones in the top magazines and top ranking yorkies compete here. But so nice to see all the wonderful yorkies. I saw LaMer in person several times - she won BISS yesterday at Bluebonnet and she is soooooo gorgeous. The Toy Show is Thursday, but impossible for me to get off now. I am entered Sat. and Sun. though.

It sounds like a great show. I hope she does well. Does have an outgoing personality? Which do you think would make a better show dog, a puppy that is very active (wild) and outgoing or one that is a little more laid back?

Hard to honestly say. I love those wild childs, but if they are too wild and female you can have a real headache heading your way to get them to behave, especially while they are going through those teenage months and harmones raging. If you can find out what motivates the calm ones, then you can also do pretty well with them in the ring too. I go for structure/movement and health first, then coat and temperment. It is so hard and each pup is so different. You really have to look at the whole package in my opinion. This girl is in the middle, not too wild and not too calm. She is a real sweetie and loves her mommy. I am also very smitten with her. She has the pedigree and I own her parents and the are both champions. So I know what is behind her too. ..And she moves like a dream. I just hope for what she can do in the ring. You don't know till you get out there and see. Also as they get use to the shows, they get better as well. So hope she will always improve with ring manners. P.S. There are some I have seen that are just too shy or too wild and do not do well for showing. Some dogs are just not meant to show and I do not think it is fair to them. Others get use to it and others love it!! Each dog is so different. Last edited by topknot; 09-12-2009 at 10:08 AM.

How long have you been working with her obedience to get ready for showing? What exactly do you do? She is really pretty. Good Luck!

Thank you. We do not train in obedience since we do not want them to sit in the ring. We train for confirmation. I do go to handling class when I can go and then I train myself. I have been around a long time. But I like handling class time, since it allows my dogs a chance to be in an environment with other dogs and they learn to be patient. Also it allows an opportunity for my trainer and other show people with champions a chance to go over my dogs and evaluate them. We take turns putting our hands on the dogs in class in order for the dogs to get use to others touching them. We check their bites and feel structure - checking everything out. It also allows us a chance to learn about the dogs. BJH - I do love the ones with outgoing personalities. I have seen Chandler and Ava's other girl she just had out - love them, with that spark and love of the ring!

Oh, I am sorry that I missed ya'll then. I would have loved to meet you and your dog(s) !!! We just had a big all breed, AKC conformation show in Raleigh last week. Two folks were kind enough to let me touch the dogs they were handling so that I could feel a true silk Yorky coat! I was able to watch one handler put her dog in crackers and it is not so mysterious to me now. I have another question. Do you or anyone else who shows their dogs, mind if people take pictures of the dogs at shows? I met somone who was very upset one time with me taking pictures, and now I worry when I take pictures. I turn my flash off so it does not disturb while the dogs are showing in the ring, but see other folks who go ahead and use their flash. I wonder if it would bother the dogs? If I take a picture of them close up, I always ask first. I am not a good photographer, just want to have picutures of good looking dogs to help me get a feel for what I should be looking for. I am envious of the guy who takes the pics of the dogs that have won best in show. Again, I wish you both a big win next week with that gorgeous baby!

Yes, it is polite to ask if you are going to take photos up close. Some do not mind, others do. Just be sure to ask first. As you found out we do not mind - asking questions, we try and help the breed and to inform as we can. If you get a yorkie magazine - The Yorkshire Terrier and/or The Yorky Club Magazine, you will be able to see many beautiful show yorkies. There is also the E Magazine for yorkies too now (on line). I could not get away from work, so could not enter the Raleigh show. They are have the Roving one coming up in Oct. in Tenn. Just check out the web site - Yorkshire Terrier Club of America for more information. Thank you all so much. I love her eyes too.

Tina, thanks for you input. I have two four month old girls that I am watching and one is a wild child and the other is a little more laid back. I have noticed at shows that sometimes the wilder, more outgoing yorkies do win but not always. I know head and tail carriage is very important in the show ring. I agree that soundness and proper conformation should come first.
