| Dropping Tail? The young male I am showing has fallen apart on me. he has dropped his tail and does it as soon as the show lead goes on. he has become very fearful of everything and everyone. he only needs a few points earning his UKC championship. We have shows coming up in late July and August and I had hoped to show him AKC in August. Now I can't. I am so disappointed. Any ideas? is it just a phase? he just turned one late June so he has plenty of time to come out of it. I will miss a few shows but that's alright if there is any hope at all he will come out of it. Thanks |

| Dee, I am sorry to hear he is doing that. I see that in the show ring a lot, unhappy dogs with tails down. You say he just started this, have you changed anything in his environment? Do you keep him by himself or is he running around with other dogs? Does he act happy when the lead is not on him? Does he like toys? I hope some of the more experience exhibitors are able to help you. I have seen them come out of it before. About all I can suggest is to put his lead on and then play with him and try to make it fun for him. It could be he is just becoming sexually mature and has interest in other things. |

| Does he play when on the lead? Does he perk up with squeaky toys when on the lead? Have you tried taking him and another dogs on fun walks on the lead? Sometimes the other dog will make him more confident and the tail goes up. Also, you might try having someone else show him. A couple of my dogs seem to show better for someone else cause "mommy" is a push-over!LOL Also, give him a break from showing. He may just have burn out, especially a young dog. Maybe take him and another dog to shows but dont show him, just make it a fun day.

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I bet you can keep working with him and get him past this! I have seen many shows dogs - mostly boys - go through this stage. Lots of positive reinforcement - both positive praise and treats - given when you see them showing confidence. I have let mine run around the front yard playing with me dragging a old lead....just to help them see that the lead can be a fun thing. Keep us updated....and good luck at the upcoming shows!

| I'm showing a boy now that when I got him he had his tail down but I always talked to him in the ring and saying good boy good boy and being real happy and I also took him to one handling class and now he has his tail up and took reserve yesterday. It just takes patience and work and like Magic said "LOTS" of patience and praise and postive reinforcements Actually Morgan was the same way and she took a 5 point major in NY It can be done Donna |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | A tip for getting his tail up....massage the underside at the base before going in the ring or while stacking and he'll hold it up.

| Progress We went to class last night and he did much better. He was scared in the car and at every truck or anything that passed uss on the highway. I had him right between my legs while I drove. Got to the place and hee seemed to know he was at a 'dog show". He held his tail up part of the time, stacked well and let the "judge' put her hands on him. Overall I am pleased but we still have work to do. |
