| Question about putting a dog in oil When I went to the show saturday and had Rainbow evaluated, one of the handlers said she at first thought she might have a wooly coat because it is so thick. But after feeling it, she said it is a silky coat. She just has a LOT of coat. In fact it is just about touching the ground already and very thick. She suggested that I put her in oil as soon as I can and in wraps as well. I have seen some articles on wrapping, but don't know exactly how to do it. Is it kind of like wrapping hair when you get a permanent? I cannot find anything about oils to use/how much to use/ or HOW to oil them. How often do you wash it out? Also what kind of bands to use to hold the wraps. Any help would be great. Also, at what age would it be "too late" to start her in the ring? She still has a black coat, but is finally starting to break. I think she will take longer to break blue than I have experienced. Sonya

When I put mine in oil I mix two tablespoons of #1 All Systems Pure Lanolin and two tablespoons of #1 All Systems conditioner in a quart of warm water and after bathing I pour this over the dog, work it in good and them rinse with warm water. I then blow dry. I also use the #1 All Systems Conditioning Shampoo for bathing. When you put them in oil you have to bath them every 4 or 5 days. You would have to experiment with the about of oil to use. You might get by with just 1 tablespoon. I have not done any wrapping so you might need someone else to advise you on that. Some people just use oil and don't wrap. I did notice that Rainbow still looks pretty dark. Could you post more pictures of her. It is possible that she is soft coated but I am not real experienced in exactly what a soft coated coat is. I know many Yorkies that don't even start their show career until they are 2 or 3 years old so you still have plenty of time. You just have to get her leash trained and used to being stacked and having strangers go over her.

Thank you for asking this question... And thanks for the reply.....I have been wondering the very same thing..... Not sure when to start doing this....at what hair length? I bathe Paddy every week, and add oil to final rinse....then rinse it with clear water.....then dry......but I do not wrap. Of course, I may be jumping the gun....she is 7 months old....and hair past her knees.......I am just so anxious to get it to the floor....LOL

Since this is all new to me also I can just tell you what I have learned. Each dog is different and what works for one might not work for another. Some people use Neutrogena oil instead of the lanolin. I have heard some swear by the Ice On Ice but I have not tried that yet. Most people don't recommend wrapping the coat until it gets nearly floor length. When you do wrap you have to really watch them at first to see how they act. Some Yorkies will pull the wraps out hair and all. Also you would probably have to keep your Yorkies away from other dogs when they are in wraps so the other dogs won't pull on the wraps. Some people just use soft scrunchies on the coat. This website has great articles on coat care, wrapping a coat, showing, etc.: http://members.cox.net/jrogan/

here is a link to my posts in a thread recently about the same thing. But I do not wrap. I have a friend that had her dog in wraps and another of her dogs tore the wraps and some coat off. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=116269

There are instructions on how to wrap a dog here http://yorkieviews.com/wrapping.htm . I use Summerwinds when I oil my dogs and I like it because it really does not make their coats feel oily.
