The girl I am showing picked up a virus at her very first show. Took her about a week to get rid of the runs and get her appetite back.

It is going to happen sometimes. Just make sure she is up to date on vaccines. I always spray my gear and my shoes with Lysol before I bring it back into the house. Spectators want to touch your dogs but they don't understand that they can carry things on their hands. I try hard not to be rude but I have started asking people not to touch my dogs. These dogs are little and they can get very sick quickly. I have a girl with a stage 5 heart murmur. She is my husband's dog and it is going to break his heart when she dies. I have to be extra careful because of Nona.

that is totally understandable...spectators should be able to understand....

i bet you have to be extra careful not to bring home anything with your husband little girl...

I am taking handling classes with Mingtoy's breeder and I enjoy it . I think I need more training than the little one .

oh really...i have signed MeiLing up for the handling class that will start on the last Thursday of this month...i am super excited...

i hope so..hehe...its a 6 week course...so i want to see what this is all about. i want to get into showing in the future and hopefully MeiLing will be a good candidate to show...hehe...since her sire just won his champion title...

I would like to take handling classes just for fun and to learn more about it. I e-mailed the kennel club in this area and haven't heard back...I'm thinking they must not check their e-mails often. I'm not sure where else to look for handling classes.

there probably just isn't anything around here...I know there are some trainers but I think they just do obedience and agility. Too bad I'm not in Houston or Dallas...I'd get involved with an actual Yorkshire Terrier club if I were there

Do they have a webpage with the calendar of events?
They should have a phone number in the phone book for your kennel club, you may want to try that.
We have had some come to the classes and try their hand at showing before deciding if it is for them. And we usually between all of the members have a pup they can practice with and always could use an extra hand.
Is there any show breeders in your area that you could help them train their dogs. It wouldn't neccessarily have to be Yorkies but prehaps another toy breed. Just some food for thought. If you were close enough to me I would love it LOL

I don't remember seeing a phone number. Their website doesn't have much information on it. I really don't think they are the most active group. They may have meetings occasionally, and I think they put on two big events each year - Responsible dog ownership day and an all-breed dog show. I'm really not sure if there are any show breeder around here either...I don't know who any of the show breeders are in any other breed (besides Maltese). And there are no maltese or yorkie show breeders closer than a couple hours from me that I'm aware of.

I thought if I took a handling class, I'd just use Rylie since I'm just doing it to learn and for fun. Lacy pulls too much on her lead, but Rylie would probably do a good job so far as practicing. I'd love to actually assist an exhibitor if one were closer...sounds like fun!

Educate yourself and buy from reputable breeders or rescue.
