| I just want to cry! Connor is my first show dog and he has a slow growing silk coat. His color is perfect according to Houston Clark and he is still getting new coat at 23 months old so it is starting to thicker up rather nicely. I have made so many mistakes while trying to find the perfect way to care for his delicate coat. He has been infinitely patient as I have learned how to wrap and band and have made him sit in different conditioners for endless minutes. I even waylaid Kirsten at a show once and got her to give me a wrapping lesson. We are finally starting to get there and some of the damage is growing out along with the new coat that is growing in. I am looking forward to him looking pretty good in the ring this season and possibly finishing him. This morning while changing his wraps (I do it every day since I took him out of oil) OUt cam a beautiful, thick, 12 inch lock of dark steel blue hair. No matt, no snarl, just a lock that looked like some one took scissors to it. I could have just cryed!!! I'm sitting here with it before me and I just can't bring myself to throw it away. I'm just sick and I don't even know what happen. Poor guy doens't even get to rough house with the girls or go out into the yard and be a dog without me watching him like a hawk. Sometimes you just got to wonder if it's all worth it. Any one else have these woes or am I just not meant for this?

Calm down...first is it on the non show side? Is it noticable when all the hair is down? If it's on the non show side it will be ok while growing out! Nothing you can do now about the loss of coat but not all is lost trust me! Do you wrap him without oil? How strong is the coat? I always, always wrap Radar while his coat is in oil! I never wrap Radar without his coat in oil! I know some don't think you need to put them in oil and wraps but I've always had much much success with this and very little breakage actually helps from breaking. He may have caught it on something, I've had that happen. BREATHE!!! Radar is always out in the yard and playing with all the dogs because I have him wrapped and in oil. | You poor girl. I know how hard you have worked with Conner. Donna is right - it's not the end of the world. I came home one afternoon and found Guy's facial furnishing laying on the sofa. It looked like it had been cut as well. I had a good cry, got the scissors, cut the other side to match (it was on the judges side) and started over. It will grow back. Hair grows. It could have been something much worse. Conner did well as a puppy. He won because of structure and substance - not because of his coat. Continue with your plans to show him and I am sure he will do fine. |

| I also ditto what everyone has said. I've also recently been shocked to find my Champion dog with great hunks of hair ripped out of the back of his neck. His son had been humping him a lot lately, and the big boy just lays down and lets him, and I've discovered that the pup likes to grab the back of his neck while he does it. He ended up ripping some of the top layers of coat out of the wraps, so my champ now has little bits of hair sticking out from his neck. Face furnishings are also fodder for puppies. But the worst I've seen was when someone, for some reason, let a friend bath her dog, and this person chopped out almost the entire topknot. The dog was a champion, but was out of the ring for about a year, so I assume this friend thought the dog wouldn't be going back in. The exhibitor managed to disguise it, and if she hadn't told me, I never would have noticed it was missing. The hair will eventually grow back in, although it heartbreaking to lose something you've spent countless hours, for lack of a better word, cultivating. |

| Oh, Tami, bless your heart!! But see, something like this has happened to lots of people, and all is not lost! You will find a way to cover it and it will grow back! It is worth it because when you finish him, you will be so proud! Just take notes so that when it happens to me I'll know what to do! Laura |

| Thanks for the comforting words guys. I have the lock of hair here on my desk and I think that's where it shall stay. Luckily it is from his right shoulder, all the way up near the root. It's going to be more noticable in about 2-3 months. I have him in a product called Revitalizer instead of oil right now, it's suppose to be better for his coat and skin. Though he has been in the wraps without the oil he hasn't matted but I brush him out carefully every day. I don't know if it got caught on something or if that little stinker Preston got ahold of it. Connor is a great dad and was teaching his son a bit about rough housing this morning before I called a halt to it. Who had the bright idea that these dogs should be shown in floor length coat anyway?

| It is so good to hear that someone else's showdog is their pet. I have been fussed at by quite a few people for babying Connor and turning him into a pet. My mentor had me put him in Shaw's oil and just band him. The bands rubbed across his shoulders, breaking coat. The heavy oil seems to irritate the skin and though I have the furniture covered with sheets to accomodate him, the oil draws dirt. Connor is definitely a high energy boy who just loves to run. In fact I have a real problem with him at out door shows. He insists on hopping through the grass. I've learned from experience that he can hop very slowly to accomodate me no matter how slowly I walk. I refuse to keep him locked up in a pen as I've been advised to do so I guess I'll just have to keep baby sitting that coat and picking grass out of it. Your boy is gorgeous so apparently acting like a dog is working for him.

I have a handler that shows Guy occasional and she has me put Mega-Tek Coat Rebuilder on his facial furnishings and topknot every night. He chewed off almost all of the hair on one side of his face and I can really tell it's growing. | |

| I keep Radar's face furnishings and top knot in wraps so it will grow. I just wasn't as diligent on his face as I was on his coat LOL...but now it's growing...he's being specialed on a limited basis right now |

| Well I guess I'll have to try Summerwinds too. I've tryed so many I really need to have a garage sale. All my babies are spoiled rotten. I think that's one of the reasons I'm a bit afraid to send Connor out with a handler. I would miss him terribly and I'm afraid he wouldn't understand. It may sound silly but I don't want his attitude towards me to change, he's my buddy.
