Default Question for people showing Yorkies...question on "next" Yorkie

Question for people showing Yorkies...question on "next" Yorkie

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok...I have a question for my friends here that are in the process of purchasing a "show" prospect Yorkie...or that have in the past purchased a Yorkie to show from a breeder.

1. When purchasing your second Yorkie, did you purchase from the same show breeder, with the same intent,to show your 2nd Yorkie???

Or

2. Did you purchase from a different "show breeder"? and a different line???

And finally, when did you decide to bring in another "show prospect?" to show.....did you choose for other reasons than your first Yorkie???

And is there a "rule of thumb" or is this something that we are just supposed
to know???? Also, it has nothing to do with breeding, it has to do with showing.....

Crazy question??? Yes, I know, I think way to far in advance, and WAY to much!!! LOL

Thanks for your help....

Shirley

When I started in Yorkies, I didnt know zip about them. After a few years and a couple of litters, I went to my first dog show. What a total thrill that was. Thats when I knew what I wanted to do.I even had guts enough to show a boy that I had produced. I had no clue what I was doing and the dog was black and soft coated, and definately pet quality. I bet everyone in the ring and outside the ring were going Yes, I was NOVICE OF THE YEAR!! Getting a "show" prospect was far from easy and I had to weed out certain people and learn about other breeders, good and bad. Then I moved and showing was out of the picture for quite a few years. After what seemed like an eternity, I moved to where I am now. I purchased many "show prospects" from reputable breeder/exhibitors but sadly they never panned out for showing. But they did improve what my dogs produced. I got better rears and top-lines. I watched, read and learned. I didnt know it would be so hard to find a dog that I could show myself with some sucess. But I finally found my mentor and bought Alex. I showed him until he was a year old and then sent him with a handler(I have to work so I cant go to enough shows to make a champion). He became a champion and so I got another boy, Oscar, from her also to show. I will probabley get a third from her too. I do have a couple other breeder/exhibitors that I might enquire about a puppy, but thats later on.

sorry, I forgot: I love the bloodlines of all my dogs. I try to stay with those lines as much as possible. Alex and Oscar have similar lines but have also added alot of new lines. so this year I will see what they can produce.

I got my first show dog from a breeder that I used to get pets from. I loved the structure of her dogs, I simply bought her oversized pups for pets. I have one of her bitches in the ring now and one of my own breeding out of the show dog that I purchased from her. I now have a mentor whose line is of the same type and will be grafting her line into mine. Luckily for me we are blessed with some of the top breeders in the country right here on the east coast.

1. When I purchased my second "show dog" I went with another breeder only because the first one did not have any show prospects available at the time I was ready to get my second one. Yes, same intent was to show. To me - I want to have the best representation to the standard as I can since my intent is to show.
2. I notice that I am pretty much sticking to the line I like.

Back in the beginning when I got a yorkie for the first time (70's) I was not aware of the standard and just bought for companionship and I thought she was a cutie. Then a yorkie owner that came to my vet office where I worked had to rehome her two female yorkies since they were moving to a Caribbean Island and did not or could not take them with her. I worked as a vet tech and knew the two yorkies she had to rehome, so I took them in. They ended up with great lines and decided to breed a year later. I researched and found a compatable champion to breed to. During this time I stated to go to shows and joined the local yorkie club - that was all it took. I was hooked!
I continued to research and watched and learned. I had some of the best mentors. Over the years the other yorkies I got after the first three - all came from well know show breeders. JMO - I noticed the difference. Back then I prefered certain lines and today I prefer certain lines, so I pretty much stick to those lines.

Well, I don't have a lot to say on this thread except that I have six adults. Four of them came from fairly well known show breeders. Two of the breeders I would definitely buy my next dog from and wish even now that i could get one from that last one. When I bought Ceeby, I didn't have a clue so he did not come from a show kennel and one is a pup from my own breeding.
