Newbie Show Question - Too Small?

Hi,

I have posted once before, but I have a question. Are Yorkies that are under 4 lbs considered a fault in the ring?

I'll go out on a limb here, and say I think the standard is 4-7 pounds. I'm sure there will be others who will know for sure.

For the show ring, you can show a yorkie as small as 3lbs...but there are some judges that like a bigger yorkie and some that like a smaller yorkie. We have seen some yorkies who are small win because their structure/movement/coat is so much better than the others in the ring...

I am sure that others will able to give you more advice...

The standard says not to exceed 7 pounds so it isn't a fault. That is all that is stated about weight. If you have a female I wouldn't recommend for breeding of course. If a male that's ok. You'd just have to find judges that like small. I hope this helps some.

I totally agree with Donna...Standard says not to exceed 7 pounds.

The thing to consider is the reason we show our dogs is to gain approval of our breeding stock. Therefore, as Donna says why would you show one you can not breed. But, there is no written rule that you can't show a smaller one. You can get away with showing a smaller male.

I agree! I showed a 3 1/2 pound bitch that I was so hoping would grow well she's got 3 points and is now spayed. She didn't grow. I wouldn't show a bitch you couldn't breed. As Mary said why show when you can't breed.

I have one right now that I know won't exceed three pounds as an adult if even that much and I just know she would earn her championship if she got larger. She is one of the best put together puppies I have ever seen and full of attitude but way to small to breed or show either unless I put Miracle Grow on her

I have a little 5 month old bitch right now just hanging on to her to see if she makes it weight wise. She's a nice put together little bitch. Cobby, short small body just like her momma! I so hope she grows more. Momma is 5 1/2 pounds but Molly is just 3 1/2 pounds at 5 months so I'm sooooooooooooooo hoping she makes it!

Donna, Your lil Krissy (hope I spelled it correctly) is a gorgeous, beautifully structured lil bitch...with an attitude that was made for the ring....It was just too bad that she didn't grow....but, she was fun to show while you were waiting for Radar.

With the high cost of showing a dog, one has to keep our breeding programs at the front of our minds. Tough to do when all these lil guys tug at our heart strings.

Yeah Krissy is a yorkie with attitude in the ring! At least she did get a Best in Sweepstakes in Houston last year and reserve to a 5 point major at the Dallas Toy speciality last year. Now she is our little house princess! Her mom is the queen LOL.

Showing is getting more and more expensive UGH. Oh well....

I'm not sure what I would do... I think that there are more reasons why people show than just to verify that their breeding stock is good... Some show for a hobby and never breed the dogs that they finish. I have KC members here that will buy their dogs and finish them w/o breeding them. I have also heard someone say that they were trying to get a ROM on one of their other dogs and planned to neuter the dog as soon as he was finished. I have also been told by someone that they just wanted a Bred By medalion and an Invitation to Eukanuba and then they would neuter the dog. If I had an excellent represention of the breed w/ great attitude, I might show despite the size, depending on what I had in mind to accomplish at the time. I just don't know for sure what I would do, but I'm leaving the options open.

I'd rather show than breed...but unfortunately I can't afford to buy a show dog every time I want to show. But I wouldn't breed a bitch that is under 5 pounds. I would show and breed a male under 5 but what most judges look for in bitches is for breeding unlike a small male. In order to get a ROM you have to breed because that depends on the number of champions he or she has in order to get a ROM. Bred by is because of breeding. But, again, I'd rather show than breed but I have to kinda breed in order to get that next show dog and it's nice to have something that I know I bred and raised to the breed standard and show case my dogs. So I know what I will take in the ring as far as a bitch or a male as far as size goes.

Oh and I've gotten my invitation to Eukunaba on two yorkies and had a dog entered and shown at Westminster, have my bred by medillion only thing I haven't accomplished is an ROM on my dogs (not a big deal to me). I also have 2 of my 4 champions that are neutered and never bred them

I had a young bitch I was showing for a while back in the 80's. She was gorgeous, beautiful silky coat and color, nice body, and spunky little personality. Her name was Camille. I just could not get any points on her. Her breeder and myself was still hoping she would grow - but she topped out at 4 pounds. Finally at one show - Tampa, I talked to the judge after showing why she didn't put my bitch up for the points. She stated that she did not want the points to be wasted on a female that was too tiny to be bred. And she was right. As the owner I just kept hoping that someday she would grow. We (breeder and myself) finally decided to have her spayed and she went to a fantastic home as a pet. Camille even got a real diamond collar and a canopy bed! More than what I had. LOL

I hope that I didn't imply that I would breed a bitch that is too small! I just meant that I might show a dog in the future that I did not intend to breed.
