Default Leaning back while stacking...

I've got a little female that I'm working with. When I stack her, she plants her front feet and then leans back. I can't get her to push forward. Any tips on how to get her to stop doing this? I don't know if she doesn't like where I place my hands or what.

I have the same problem with Radar. I will pick him up rear and head and rock back and forth gently and place the front feet on the table and then keep my hand still under his chin and round behind the ears and then keep my hand on his rear and push forward a bit. I take to handling classes a couple of times and have people go over him. I got him out of posting but now with showing him very little right now he's gone back to posting so back to handling classes for a bit.

I too have had that issue, what I have found that works wonders is "velveta cheese" stack them, offer a small chunk, put it up to their nose once the smell it, pull your hand back to full stack position they will reach forward for it, let them lick it and gnaw on it dont give them the entire piece; once they get into position, praise them and remind them to stay....do this a couple times, once they get secure they will automaticly reach for any treat you offer as bait. Its worked for me!

I hope this helps

I've never done baiting before, but this one has made me decide to try it. Right now, she loves Beggin' Strips, so I'm breaking off teeny pieces of those to use as praise. I've done the swaying with her and that results in her putting her feet up on my hands. When I did it though, I had my hand under her jaw like I would normally. I wonder if that's what she's resisting. Is it possible to just place my hand between her front feet on her chest?

She's definitely a stubborn girl. She just sits down or lays down when I put her on the lead and won't budge. So we're taking it easy with that. I'm going to try baiting her for that as well.

Thank you guys for the tips. I knew there had to be something I could do!

Default stacking

Try stacking from the opposite end of the table...put the back feet on the back edge of the table, if they lean back they feel no table...if they put their foot back they realize they have nothing to stand on..mind get the idea fairly fast...and when you go back to stacking in at the front end of the table, all they remember is.."if I move back I fall off"...

Now that's a really good idea too. I will try that with the bait and maybe she'll quit being a stubborn girl!

pat, I thought you had to put their front feet near the front edge of the table. So, you can put them anywhere on the table? The back sounds like a good idea.

I think she's talking about putting them at the back edge of the table for training purposes. Then putting them to the front edge for showing.

Dee Rose was saying the the back for training not for showing, if they back up they will lose footing, if this is done a couple times, they soon learn the back of the table is not where they want to be...

here is pics of table stack in a show

Another trick is to pull their tail which will naturally make them lean forward.

This really works. My male has a tendancy to be stubborn and pull back when stacking too. Pulling the tail backward causes them to pull forward against you. Something makes me think they are doing it to spite you as if to say "I'm going to do the exact opposite of what you want"

Gotta love the terriers!
