imo there should be more larger yorkies as they have less health problems, yorkies are getting so small in a few years time there wont be any yorkies big enough to breed with.

Does anyone here posting how HUGE yorkies should be bred realize that there is such a thing as a STANDARD for a reason???? It is so Yorkies look like Yorkies, not some random terrier..which is what a lot of these bigger dogs look like... UNDER 7 LBS is part of the standard for a reason.. a 7 lb dog is certainly a SMALL dog, yet big enough to safely produce puppies in most cases..so why is 7 lbs too small? The standard has been in place for decades...why do people take it into their own hands to decide it's useless?

Not getting it. It is just as wrong to breed tiny yorkies as it is to breed oversized...if it doesn't meet the standard (and it's up to the breeder to learn what that is BEFORE BREEDING) then alter the dog..period...otherwise, God help this breed!

BTW.. my first yorkie was a whopping 9 lbs, he had PDA (Patent Ductus Arterosis - A massive congenital heart defect) and required surgery to keep him alive. So let us not go there about how bigger is healthier. Keep it within standard..period.

Read what I wrote.. dogs who are not bred to standard... LOOK LIKE A RANDOM TERRIER.. this didnt say BIG YORKIES... it said any dog not bred within standard PERIOD. Size is not the only variation of standard, obviously.

Okay you tell me, then.. WHICH Of these Yorkies looks like a Yorkie? 1 is a HUGE, backyard bred female pup, the other is a CH. sired show pup...you tell me which one looks like a yorkie, which looks like a "random terrier".. if you think the first looks like the better dog, then well...lol.. I guess you need to go study the standard.

i agree with both sides i think...the bigger ones dont look as much like a yorkie then the small ones but whos to say what other people like and want in their yorkie. if someone wants to breed a larger yorkie then so be it...and if they are selling them im sure they are advertising them as being from big parents and if thats what they are being able to sell then that must be what people want...my fergie is probably gonna be about 10-11 lbs im guessing and i know thats bigger then the standard but its still small...i think a yorkie is a yorkie and what makes them yorkies is not the size but they look of them (color, coat etc.) and their brain...or whats inside i guess...so i think nobody on here should be criticizing anyone for the size of the yorkie they have and want to breed.

Whos to say are the people who wrote the standard and those who work hard to uphold that standard in every dog they produce. If you don't like the Yorkie standard, get a different breed..or please at least don't do the breed the disservice of breeding dogs who are not standard quality.

you're not understanding what i'm saying..... not being 'breed standard' does not make a yorkshire terrier a 'random terrier' too anybody who has a yorkshire terrier that doesn't conform to 'breed standard' for whatever reason that is hurtfull and offensive, thats all i'm getting at. And i sincerely hope that all 3 pictures you have shown are your own dogs otherwise if the owner sees this thread i think they may be a tad offended....
I think you just need to be a little more understanding.
As for looking up the breed info or standard......hey i'm English we MADE the breed heheh

In my opinion, responsible and serius breeders should ONLY breed animals that reflect the standard of the breed (including a Yorkie that is not over 7 LB) However, let's see that in a litter of "standard Yorkies" there are 4 puppies and 1 of the puppy is oversized or too tiny, then this dog should be sold to a loving home and be fixed. He should not be used for breeding purpose. I do not have anything against over sized Yorkies (They are loving and have a big heart too

) However, an oversized female should not be bred. Just my opinion and do not intend to offend anyone.
