Two years ago, after my 13 year old cat died, I was looking to add another cat to my home and responded to a petfinder ad for a young cat in Arizona. That "Rescue" was called "Castaway Treasures" and I went to the "facility" which was a very old home in a VERY seedy area of town. The front porch was enclosed in chicken wire and I was not permitted inside. The shelterowner met me outside in the yard and instructed me to stay about 10 feet within its gates, which was 15 feet or so from the porch of the home. The windows were blocked out with aluminum and there were 4 dogs on the porch. When the lady met me outside, she went in to get the cat and I could hear her SCREAMING profanities at the dogs inside, telling them to "Get the F*!@ down" repeatedly. When she brought the kitten out in a carrying case, it had snot caked on it's nose, oozing eyes and ear mites. I could not take this cat because my other 16 year old cat had just had a tumor removed and was susceptible to infection. I couldn't bring a sick cat into my home. It KILLED me to send that kitten back into that home. I wanted so badly to just run with it but I didn't know anyone who could take it until I could get it to a vet. I cried all the way home. I believe, with what I know now, that that "rescue" organization was in fact a hoarder. It just seemed shady to me. But it broke my heart that those animals had to live with that raving screaming terrible woman. I eventually alerted petfinder.com and the city animal control. I didn't see many ads from her on petfinder after that so I'm not sure if she was banned.

Anyway, I don't have a very good taste in my mouth from the experience and this dogowner's recent experience just speaks volumes about what is wrong in animal rescue today.

(I do have another experience of a cat rescue in the Phoenix area that was superb and very impressive, so I don't think they are all bad.)
That was so sad I hope you reported them. to HS...

He came right back when I yelled his name but things could have been very different. So I know that things can happen even to the best pet owners...and just because your dog escapes doesn't mean you are neglectful. Anyway, people need all the help they can get. Phoenix is a big city and it's hard to track a dog here when the streets are set up like grids and there's a million ways to get to the same place. It's impossible to find a dog if you have no idea what direction he went in. So I try to help anyway I can.
I d the same as you Just a couple weeks ago I took in a HUGE husky mix and his sister basset hound Till the owner could come for them. They were strutting there stuff down my street. They had gotten out of there yard..I have done this several times here I am in a small town.
here is Hugo and Missy. Hugo was HUGELY tall and ended up being really friendly. Thank god.

I have some great news!

I just went to lunch and when I came back there was a message from this young lady who has been trying to get her dogs back. (By the way, it's actually her parents who own the dog. She's an adult and has been helping them try to find the dogs.) It said:

"...."My dad showed up at their 'rescue' place. Said there are at around 20 springers there. The lady is in there and wont open the door. Apparently the police are on their way. Ill update you when I know something (hopefully it will be the good news that we got her back!!!)

and a short while later, there was another message:

"just wanted to let you know we got trixie back.!!! I dont know the whole story yet, but sounds like the city of maricopa police department helped us. Thanks for all your help and support. I will let you know if my Dad decides to pursue them in any way"

She sent me a lovely picture of Trixie and she is a doll.

By the way, the "Rescue Organization" was:

"Springer Spaniel Rescue of America"

If the City of Maricopa Police were involved, I suspect the rescue is based in Maricopa City, AZ.

Terrific news!! I'm glad to hear it.

A big pat on the back to you...cause she may have never found her Trixie without your help.

Yes, no matter how hard they try, the people behind me can't keep their little dog in their back yard. They have a fence but I swear he hops it and he's only like a chihuaha. I always catch him running down our alley. One night, while I was taking the boys out in my yard to piddle, my back neighbors were not home and there he was running down the alley again. I put my dogs in the house and coaxed "Diamond" into my backyard where he stayed safely until they could come get him. When I awoke the next morning he was gone. I told them if I ever find him running, I will put him in my yard and to always check there if they can't find him. He can roam it for hours preoccupied with smelling my dogs smells and trying to mark them so it's safe and a good distraction for him...better than him running the streets!

By the way, out of curiosity, I just checked Petfinder and "Castaway Treasures" is still posting on there.

Just an example of what I'm talking about....look at this listing and look at the background conditions of where these dogs are living in it's so-called-rescue home:

http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/...?petid=6886342

Odd.

Further correspondence about Trixie:

I sent her this:

"This woman sounds like a hoarder. It's terrible that this happened to
> your parents but if she is a hoarder, the City will report her and it
> may save those dogs lives. You never know...understanding Tiffany's
> loss is difficult but I believe everything happens for a reason and
> maybe God intended for this all to happen to bring this "rescue
> Organization" to light and to save those dogs and others from the
> heartache your parents would have experienced had they not pursued this."

And she replied with this:

"yeah, apparently the police officer realized there was something wrong. They were so angry that they were found.Claimed they spayed her yesterday...(I was in touch with them early yesterday morning. They had already done it) and according to the citizen who gave Trixie to them, they had her spayed by the next day when she called to check on Trixie. When my Dad asked for the vets info...they refused. So needless to say, they didn't get paid a dime. These people handled themselves very bad in front of the police, so its out there and they are being watched. Hopefully they will be shut down. They claim that their dogs are in foster homes (told us that about Trixie) but its not true...they are all under one roof. Thanks again. I think trying to get Trixie back took our attention off of what happened to poor Tiffany. Now that trixie's home, its setting in. But I think you might be right. There was a reason. "

Angry

At least this horror of a story has a happy ending for one of the dogs.
Shame on those rescue people. People like that give the other rescues
a bad name.
That rescue was heartless.
The owners of the dogs must have crying their eyes out daily thinking
they would never get their Trixie back. I can't imagine the stress these
people were under. I hope the rescue people get fined. They had to break somekind of law. They sure didn't have any
moral code of conduct.

That is a horrible story with a bittersweet ending...they got their dog back but sadly lost one too...thank goodness they got her back though!! I do a bit of rescue myself and cannot imagine doing what they have done. I usually have dogs that are turned over to me from their owners though..but I still protect myself with a hand signed letter. Geesh nothing shocks me anymore..

Their rescue is listed in Cave Creek on their shelter profile on Petfinder but when you call to set up a meeting with the adoptee, they send you to a home in downtown Phoenix...one of those old homes on like Van Buren and 12th street. (I can't remember the exact address...it's been two years.)

OH I am so Happy they got there Trixie back. That is wonderful news!!!
I also hope that the rescue/Hoarder is at least investigated. They really should get HS involved. They need to be aware of the situation.

God bless you for helping the way you did ...(((((((HUGS))))))
