| Houston Yorkie in Need of a Good Home We are looking for a good home for our male yorkie, Winston (“Winnie”). He’s a great dog. He’s healthy with all his shots and is neutered. He is 9 years old and has been my wife’s companion his whole life – now he’s my step-dog. His favorite activity is sitting with me in the recliner. He’s full of spunk and quirks, as are most yorkies – won’t eat unless we are there, sits on my left side only , favorite toy is a leather moccasin that we replace annually, arch enemy is the mailman, very protective when we are home. I’ve always preferred large hunting dogs myself, but this little guy has earned my respect. Pictures attached. However, our daughter is 14 months old now and just started to walk. Winnie has been good about avoiding her until now, but we are concerned that she will surprise him, or play with him when he is eating, and he will snap at her. I understand that the yorkie breed is not recommended for small children – and we are beginning to see those signs. We would love to find a good home in Houston for him. You are welcome to visit him at our home. We will show you how we’ve trained him, feed him, give him his thyroid medicine, etc. We’d love for you to have his toys and beds, as well. Warning: my wife will be crying when you take him – I'll miss him too. If interested, please email me at gary@swanalytics.com Last edited by mr_houston; 07-08-2005 at 05:03 AM. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I'm in Houston - I'd LOVE to say good luck - but why are you giving him away BEFORE he's actually done anything ? I don't understand how you can have a yorkie 9 years and then jsut give him away because he has quirks ? PLEASE don't take this wrong - but what has he DONE to deserve this ? Has he actually snapped at your daughter ? Is he attacking her ? I can understand this if your fear for your daughters safety - I really can - but are you doing this IN CASE ? or has he really done something drastic ? It sounds like he's just a 9 year old in a pretty good home that's getting sent away for no real reason - I'm sorry if this sounds hard - I LOVE yorkies and hate to see this poor guy sent to a strangers home when he's been with you for so long.......that makes me sad - I WILL say good luck ...I'm sure someone out there will give him the love he deserves - but do you REALLY have to send him away ? |

| Oh Gary! What a dilemma! Poor Winston must feel he has been replaced by the baby! I understand your concern for your human baby, though! Is there no way to keep him?

| When I said "I understand that the yorkie breed is not recommended for small children – and we are beginning to see those signs", I was trying to be subtle. Last weekend, he did finally bite her. He'd gotten cornered on the couch and our daughter tried to pet him for the third time. Problem is, we can't always be right there to stop her, now that she's walking. I just didn't want anyone to think he was some kind of menace. In fact, he's great with adults and will sit in anyone's lap. We just won't be able to give him to a family with small children. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I didn't think you made him sound like a menace - he sounds very nice - I understand your concern... but sometime you can work with them to get them used to children - I guess since I'm not in your shoes - I shouldn't really be saying anything - I Wish you all the best luck - I REALLY hope you find a solution that works for BOTH of you - If you DO give him up - I hope he gets a great home with someone to love him - after 9 years of being secure in his home - he deserves that. |

| I'm sorry, but I don't understand your thinking. How could you get rid of such a devoted family member. He has given you 9 years of unconditional love. He doesn't have that many more years to live, so how could you even think of getting rid of him. I just hope he doesn't grieve to death, when you rid yourself of him.

| I understand you - the child must come first in all ways of course! Thank you so much for giving him a chance to get a new home instead of putting him down! I live in Denmark so it's gonna be next to impossible to get him here, but I'd take him in a heartbeat He looks cute and I am sure he is a doll. I don't have kids and I don't want any so it's only the distance that makes it impossible

| Something to consider... You know...my mother had a tiny Manchester Terrier who was older when my kids were little. She would get them in a second if they poked at her or went to pick her up... They learned early to leave her alone...called her "The Owie Doggie"...but they learned how to act around her~ I think that you could easily place a gate and keep Winnie away from the baby when your not going to be able to watch them. Kids learn amazingly fast on what they should do or not do. If Winnie lives there...then your daughter automatically knows he belongs and isn't a toy to grab. I had a mini poodle who was 7 when my first son was born..then 9 when #2 son came around..and 11 when my daughter was born. I taught them to leave her alone and be nice... She died at the age of 19...my middle son adored her...they were always very gentle with her..because they had always heard for years.... Be careful...she is old... Just something to think about...I'm sorry for what your going through..but also know that kids are smarter than we give them credit and your daughter will learn real fast on how to treat your Winnie. I wish you only the best.

| Oh, he is so cute, wish I lived near you - he could come and live with me and Lida Rose! Don't be discouraged, no one knows your situation but you. I sure hope you find him a good home, preferably close by where you can keep tabs on him. 9 years is a long time, it must be a heartbreaking decision and your poor wife. I'm sure you didn't reach this lightly.Best of luck to you and that cutie pie!
