| New Mom here! Any help appreciated Hello, I am so excited. Since, I was 7yrs old I have wanted a Yorkie. I am almost over the hill at the big 40. FINALLY! I will be getting my new little girl the end of May. My lil girl was born March 21,07. I've named her Faith. I am getting nervous about how to care for her. I know that they have problems with there teeth etc. I just don't know how to start off the potty training, or the feeding. I have heard to so many different things about feeding Yorkies. From dry food, to both canned and dry, to organic and I am overwhelmed. HELP...All I need is some clarification about what the majority of you are feeding your dogs. thank you so much Maria

| A good way to start looking for a good dog food is by going to : www.dogfoodanalysis.com The foods listed under 4 and 5 star categories are the foods recommended for yorkies Make sure to check that they are not on the recall list. Also, you can look at the 1 and 2 star foods so you can compare. That way you can see why the 4 and 5 star foods are so much better. The lower quality foods use ethoxyquin, BHA, BHT, by-products and all kinds of stuff in the lower category foods. Ethoxyquin is actually a carcinogen that is banned from human foods, yet they allow it to go into dog foods

| Also, don't worry so much about canned and dry, your baby will do fine on either or a mix of both As long as you take care of your baby's teeth by brushing and getting him/her them used to it while still young. Also, if you're going to be grooming the dog yourself, get her used to you touching between her toes and touching the ears and mouth and stuff like that. It will make it much easier on you and the dog when it's grooming time if she trusts you

I have a REALLY hard time getting 1/4 per day into Chloe. I try my best not to force her to eat, but if she hasn't eaten all day I will force her a bit at dinner time because she's so tiny (barely over 2lbs at almost 6 months old) that I worry about her. She's got no meat on her little body! Good luck! Also, for Yorkie clothing www.barkindogclothes.com is AWESOME! And really well priced. There's a whole whack of website owners & really awesome seamstress on here! I want to take Chloe everywhere, but we're still working on getting her used to her carrier...

| I recommend free feeding a puppy...Basically, put in a bowl, however much the bag says to feed a dog Faith's age and size...Then leave it down for her to munch on throughout the day. And by putting in the bowl the amount she's supposed to have throughout the day, you will know if she's eating enough Puppies can have hypoglycemic episodes and in my opinion it's easier to prevent one than to stop one. So make sure she eats small meals several times per day. Then you can give her a little bit of canned in the mornings or in the evenings also Also, keep nutri-cal on hand just in case she's not eating enough, give her a little of that. Of course, home cooking is preferred if you have the time. There are some wonderful recipes if you just do a search for recipes. Just make sure you add some sort of a supplement so that she gets all the nutrients and vitamins she needs Can't wait to see pictures of Faith!!!

| Layla was free-fed from the day we got her (chances are your breeder will send her home with food.. usually not the best quality.. so after she is home for a week or two.. start slowing introducing a high qulaity food.. we feed Fromms but solid gold, merrick, Go, Wellness are all great foods... you will have to go either online or a small pet store to find them... stores like PetSmart and PetCo don't sell this great stuff!) and she still is free fed.. if she eats 1/4 a cup a day i'm thrilled! in the morning she gets about a tsp of wet food.. just as a treat and that way i know if she has had nothing all day.. she has had that in the morning.. potty training is a tough one with these little guys! their bladders are so teeny that they always need out! Layla went out about every hour or after a nap, playing or eating... i'd bring her out on her harness and leash i'd say "hurry up" and if she peed or pooped.. big party a treat and TONS of praise.. i'm sure my neighbours thought i was nuts! but now she is able to tell me when she wants out! but keep in mind.. accidents do happen a crate is a great way to help her at night... if you plan on crating her (which i'm a huge fan of) put pillows or towels in the back so that you leave her only a very small space.. just enough to lay down... when she cries to tell you she has to go out... take her out (making as little fuss as possible) say your phrase.. hurry up... and giver her about 5 min.. if nothing happens back in the crate.... it wasn't until layla was about 5-6 mothts that we were sleeping throuhg the night.. but it's well worth the trouble! oh.. AND WELCOME TO YORKIE TALK!! this is such a great place! i can't wait to see pictures of little Faith!!! |

BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | First off welcome to YT! You sure came to the right place for pawfect info! I'm Missy and I'm the mommy of 2 beautiful baby girls, Lillie (1) & Baby (4) You have to decide if you want to pee pad train her or let her go outside to potty. My girls do both, but we started with the pee pad. Being in Indiana we have some yucky weather from time to time, your in MI so you know what I mean. I feed my girls Holistic Eagle Brand, I use the Fish and Sardine, this is wonderful for the coat and the skin. When Baby came to me about 2 1/2 months ago, her coat was a mess! She had bad, very bad dandruff. So I put her on the fish diet and I use fantastic grooming products and her coat looks 85% better. I just bathed her 2 days ago and I hardly seen anymore dandruff. Good luck to you, I'm sure you will be fine and your so lucky to be getting a new baby! Can't wait to see pictures of the little blessing! |

| Looks like you are already getting great advice! I agree to "free feed" your baby. I have been cooking chicken and rice for them and mix in other things like veggies, cottage cheese and wet dog food - either Merricks canned or Evangers. So far I think we like Evangers a little more. We feed Innova dry puppy food as well. Potty training....ah yes. Drives me nuts! You are supposed to start off confining her to a small area - say inside an xpen. Line it with pee pads and just don't let her have free run of the house - only with you. Actually what they say is to tether her to your belt loop with the leash. She goes EVERYWHERE with you! That way there are no "sneakys" - you will catch her when she starts to make a mistake and can take her to her potty spot. You slowly take away pee pads in the xpen until you are down to just one. I did not tether and I have a lot of mistakes with Truffles. I guess I should pratice what I preach! I did the xpen thing and then slowly gave her more room...like gated off the entire kitchen and then expanded to everywhere but the carpeted areas. I take Vixxen EVERYWHERE with us. Always travel with her (I just got Truffles so she will also be coming along!), take her to the movies, out to eat ( I know this is wrong but she is in her purse), boating, everywhere!! Oh I should say I am very much considering The Honest Kitchen diet also....it sounds very healthy and much easier than what I've been doing!! Hope we helped you!!! Oh if you need help with pics you can pm me and I'll help you. Trina

| New Puppy Feeding Advise My Yorkie Toy (that's his actual name, lol) is 11 years old and a picky eater to the extreme. I tried all brands of dry food and he just would not eat it. I also cooked for him, but he was not getting the right nutrition and it upset his stomach more times than not, plus who has the time, really??? I had to resort to canned food, which I do not recommend because a diet solely of wet food is bad for their teeth!!! Years passed and I finally gave Royal Canin a try and voila, he eats it!!! They make dry food for a few different breeds including Yorkshire Terriers.I have to mix a little Cesars wet food in with it, or he refuses. I have a new puppy now, a 12 week baby girl name Gia and she refused Eukanuba, which what is what her breeder fed her. She smelled my older dog's food and since that day refused her Eukanuba. So I went out and got Royal Canin Puppy Small Breed for her and???? Yes, she loves it! I feed her 4 times a day still and she eats about one and a half teaspoons dry kibbles mixed with one teaspoon Cesars Puppy wet food. It all depends on how big your new puppy is. My Gia is 12 weeks old and weighs 1.5 pounds. Your puppy will show you how much it needs to eat. Allow 10 minutes to eat, keep showing her to the bowl, puppies have a short attention span and might get distracted before actually being finished. Right after feeding, take her outside to potty. Every time! P.S. Royal Canin is being sold at Petsmart, if you have one in your area |

| You guys - I am so thankful for this post! I've had my little Zoe for 3 weeks not and I have been really worried about how much she eats but she is putting on weight and going potty fine so I figured she way doing fine. Then I went to the vet this afternoon and told her that she was eating probably 1/4 cup maybe a little less prior to the last couple of days and the vet said something like "oh, that's not very much" and so I started to panic again. I made sure to measure her food tonite and gave her 1/4 and she only ate about 1/2 of it maybe a little more. But it sounds like that's a normal amount? |

| My breeder reccommend Nutri Cal to me to give to my puppy every day for the high blood sugar.. and all those problems. And he is on Iams Dry Puppr Food for Toy Dogs.. works great!!! No Problems with him yet. About the potty training you HAVE to be consistant about it. Take her out about every 30 mins, unless you want to do the pee pee pads, which I did not do, so you would have to ask someone else about that. Any questions let me know!!!!! Congrats on the little one!! They are soooo much fun to have around! |
