| Yorkie and People Sketches Hi everyone! How are ya'll? I had stopped sketching, because of personal problems, but I've started again. Tell me the honest truth, do you guys think these are good? I did the women when I was in 9th grade for a project, and I did the Yorkie a couple of weeks ago (my first ever dog sketch). Thanks in advance for your feedback... |

| You asked for honest...I have taught both advanced drawing and painting so I will tell you what I tell my students...When you are drawing any living thing there is never a straight line..All living things have a shape and the lines are always to some degree curved...the fur on the dog is too stiff and the lines are too straight...the overall shape is okay but you need to go back in and loosen up your pencil strokes. They need to be more curved which is what gives the illusion that the dog has a shape. when drawing the no 1 rule is light shades come forward and dark recedes. I can not see the portrait of the woman so I can't comment....I hope this helps

| Well, I think it's pretty good for my first one. And I wasn't drawing a live portrait, the pic came off of a calender. Thanks for your comments, I will take them into consideration next time I do a sketch, you were very helpful. Did you click the small pics to make them bigger? If you do you can see the woman...and the Yorkie better. |

| Zoe,please do not take offense to my constructive criticism...every artist has to develop a tough outer shell because you will spend the rest of your life listening to comments both good and bad about your work. I know... I am a working artist and have been painting and drawing a long time. My comments were not meant to be hurtful...you asked for honest and I am qualified to give you an educated and honest opinion. One of the worst things that can happen to a young artist is to hear constant unconditional praise because then you will develop an ego before you develop your skills. That is not a bad first attempt now go back and work on it some more and it will be even better. I was able to see the dog close up...the portrait is too big for my screen and I can only see it in portions.

| Ok, I didn't know that you didn't mean it as mean. I guess I'm just a very defensive person... Thank you for all your comments, they were greatly appreciated ! You are so very nice for telling me all of that info. This is not the first I've heard of you by the way, I've been looking at your work for a while now, I must say I enjoy it very much! My favorite is El Greco, I love how messy and natural his hair looks . I have also been drawing my whole life, my work got put in our local library once upon a time in my public school days. I resized the pic, can you see it now? And many thanks to you bugaboosmom! |

| Great Job! Everyone has their own stlye and I would recommend looking at other sketches and seeing how they used light and shadows. You can have your style and people either like it or they don't. I personally love all different types of art. I think that practice and having the correct lighting will be great for you! Don't stop. Keep practicing. If you are looking for a more realistic approach, use the grid system! Look at where the light is coming from. You could just keep doing what you're doing and have a unique style. Charcoal may be something you're intereste in. I think you would love it!! |

| Thanks Michele...I like my sketches to look kind of cartoony/realistic...that is my style. I love your style Michele, the grid system is very acurate! I was going to do charcol, but I decided on my first one I should do regular pencil. I'm still trying to find a frame for Zoe's portrait...I can't find one that does it justice. Thanks for your advice, I need more information on the grid system, if you have time to give it, I know you are swamped with orders! Last edited by ilovezoe; 02-19-2006 at 04:44 PM. |

As an artist, you do have to have thick skin! LOL One person may love it and and another hate it LOL. LaviniaHyacynth is an excellent artist and her art isn't exactly what the picture looks like. That's her style. She was just giving constructive critism. Believe it or not that's what I love!! I don't always agree, but I go back and look to see what they meant. Constructive critism has helped me tremendously!! I will email you about the grid system!! Keep sketching you are doing great!! | |

I agree with your posts. Practice, practice, practice that's all i can say. Drawing isn't something you can't just pick up one day and master, a person has to be talented in that area and then devote a lot of time into mastering it and coming up with their own style.

| I grew up taking honors art classes and advanced placement art classes. I even went to school with the intention to get an art degree although I have taken a long break from school now. Bottomline is, I have had to endure a lot of constructive critism while working on my portfolio. I try to use critism to improve myself while always maintaining my own style and techniques. While art is very diverse and there are many styles and techniques and opinions, there are certain things that critics continually look at, which is an artists interpretation of an object wether through form, contrast, technique, shape, style, color, texture and many other things. So when you are asking for your artwork to be criticed you have to accept the ideas and opinions of your critics and make the best of it. It will make you stronger. If people just told michelangelo that his work was great whenever he was a student, then he may not have created the wonderful artwork that he is so well known for today. So I hope you continue to draw and keep up you passion for it. I wish you well in everything you do.
