| Affordable fencing? Does anyone have suggestions for affordable fencing for a little 6 pound yorkie? We have a small backyard, but it would be plenty big enough for him to run around in if we ever fenced it in. It is fenced on 2 sides (by neighbors) but not on the other two sides, and to get a wooden or vinyl fence installed would be $1000's, even for our small amount of fence needed. I've read some things about metal farm fences and plastic mesh fences (like from Best Friend Fence), but I wonder if people with yorkies have had success with them? For instance, in the plastic mesh fencing situation, I know Scoop would try to chew on it and or put his weight on it (not jump over it, just put his front feet on it) and I don't know how durable it would be. Any suggestions? We already have a tie out for him, but it just gets tangled in everything, and honestly - it's pretty heavy for just a little yorkie. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I have seen people use cheap metal fencing like chicken fencing or whatnot...

| I'd recommend that you be very careful with fencing. It's not only about keeping your dog in, it's about keeping others out. I'm an avid DIYer and decided to build my own little cute fence using farm wire wrapped around 4x4 wood posts. As you said, it is easy to push against, push under, etc. My neighbor has a German Shepherd that has never been an issue...until one day as a deck builder entered my neighbors back yard, and she escaped her fenced in yard. She immediately ran to my small fence and tried to get through it. Now I don't actually know if she came under it or over it, as I didn't see, (but my fence was bent and stretched unbelievably from her body going against it) as I turned to try to get ZoE, who was up at the top of the yard. Well, the other dog went after ZoE and ZoE ran like hell. I couldn't grab Zo, she was so quick! So, I made the choice to run straight to my breezeway and open the door wide and yell over and over again to ZoE. ZoE came flying towards me, with the dog on her heels. She ran into the breezeway and I slammed it shut. The other dog crashed into the door, and stepped back. I quickly scooted through the door and scooped ZoE up in the breezeway. The whole event was absolutely terrifying, and happened so FAST! And I constantly think what if...what if she had grabbed ZoE before she made it to the breezeway? What if ZoE had been tethered to her long leash around the tree (where I latched her to before I had the fence, while I was working in the yard, tanning, planting, etc), she'd have been sitting duck. So remember if not just about what you're keeping in, it's also about what you're keeping out. My fence is now five foot high and reinforced with wood along the bottom so nothing can get under. It doesn 't look as pretty as I wanted, but it does its job!

| OMG!! Poor Zoe! I bet she was scared to death! No doubt her little heart was beating like crazy!! I made something like you did for Spice for her inside bed and nap time. I made it 30 in square and she has plenty of room. I was thinking of doing the same for outside . There are no dogs in my area at all that arent already kenneled so I dont worry about that but I think I would make a top for it so nothing flying can get to her . I have one of those canvas zippered things that has a top on it but I use it for my JR terrier. They are nice but Spice is so inquisitive she would find a way to get out LOL |

What bothers me the most now about it, is the effect it's had on ZoE's personality. She's always been a bit on the shy side, but we go to small dog meet-ups, and while shy, she would interact with the other dogs, and run around and play. Now, at meet-ups, she doesn't interact at all with the other dogs. She will get as far away, and as high up, on furniture as she can to avoid them. She will also jump on strangers laps to get away from another dog. It has completely changed her. She does have a couple of doggie friends (dogs that belong to my friends) that shes known since she was a puppy and she is fine with just them one on one. That's another reason to make sure your dog is safe; a traumatic event can have lasting repercussions, and potentially scar them for life. Seeing such a change in your dog's personality is devastating.
