Tear stains

Sorry if there is a thread already out there for this, I couldn't find one when looking. I was just wondering what the best product might be to give my puppy for his tears. He's almost 11 weeks old so he might be too little for anything but his face does get coated with tear stains quite a bit. I guess my questions are 1) best product to use to prevent that (I've seen things that people can sprinkle in their food, etc. and just want to make sure its safe) and 2) what's the best way to keep their face look soft and clean and not all wet? Should I use a puppy wipe or soft face cloth? Help would be appreciated!!

I have a maltese and I use spring bottled water for drinking and I use Tear Stain Remover | The Safe and Effective solution for Cats and Dogs by Eye Envy for topical. I do not believe in using antibiotics for cosmetic reasons and most internal products for tear staining like angel eyes have an antibiotic in them called tylosin (tylan powder).

You can also use probiotics if bad tear staining to keep good bacteria in system and better than antibiotics which kills good and bad bacteria. Tear staining is from bacteria that builds up from wetness of tears sitting on fur so if you clean daily you should not have as much of a prob.

You can use a baby bib as well and wash with spa lavish facial scrub as it smells good and cleans up their face and many maltese owners use this as well.

a friend of mine just used this stuff called Angel Eyes, Angels Eyes | Tear Stains | Pet Coat Stains | Eye Care For Pets | Eye Stains

Her Yorkies are 5 and 3 and have had tear stains as long as I've known them.

Completely gone. She used it for 10 days, sprinkling on their food, she highly recommends it.

When I changed Teegy's food from Royal Canin to Wellness the excessive tearing stopped, a pleasant surprise for both of us.

That's funny, when I changed Joey's food from RC to Blue Wilderness, he got excessive tearing and stains, and we switched back to Royal Canin and it cleared up. I think in some cases an allergy to a food ingredient can cause it, and of course puppies have it due to teething, and that may clear on it's own. That is such a great link filled with information about tear stains. The thing that I notice with my 3 is if they have the occasional treat that has red dye in it their tears seem to change color slightly darker. So I try to avoid anything red now to avoid this problem.

yep red dye will definitely do it

some say steer clear of beet pulp in food as well but that is controversial as beet pulp is white when you see it not red

I can't believe they're still using dyes in some foods, I hate this, and red dyes have been associated with allergies.

I think many people just "assume" that beet pulp is red and they link the two, thanks for the information that it's white.

yeah i use to say it all the time then someone corrected me and showed me the pic lollll so i attached a pic of beet pulp pellets

Lol, who would have thought? I always pictured it looking like tomato paste, it looks more like wood pulp! From my understanding, it's the artificial dyes that give some a problem, natural colors in foods aren't a problem.

Sorry to bump this back up but I'm soo hesitant on getting Angel Eyes since it is like "medication".....what is the general consensus on this stuff? Should I get it to clear up his eyes or avoid it? Anyone else use it? I did change his food but that hasn't seemed to help it, thanks guys!

I've read that some people have had great success with it, it does contain a small amount of an antibotic called Tylan. Some people believe that it's safer to get the Tylan directly from your vet. Here's what one link says about Tylan:

TYLAN is the brand name for Tylosin, a veterinary antibiotic that is FDA approved for fowl (chickens/turkeys) and swine (pigs). This is used primarily to treat respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum. Many Maltese people have found that this product can also have some beneficial effect in controlling tear staining in Maltese. You can purchase this from Omaha Vaccine. I think I would talk to the vet about this, and see what he thinks. I doubt if short term use would cause any harm.
