| u show them you are the leader like dont let them walk ahead of you. when u walk them, u always have to walk first. going outside you always have to step outside first. or like eating... u eat before them..... those kind of things show you are the leader. |

| You eat first, then let them lick your plate. teach them simple commands like stay or wait I combine these two. i put my plate down, then tell them wait and they cannot lick it until I say OK. You walk toward them and make them back up. You take toys or food away from them, then give it back to them. You make them wait to be invited onto your lap. Take them for walks but do not allow them to walk in front of you. If you accomplish all of that, your dog will know who the pack leader is. |

| Thanks zoes mom. Your babys a cutie too! Oh ya another thing is if you play tug of war games you have to show that you win most of the time. The alpha always wins. I looked those things up before on google... You just search how to show your dog you are the leader... A bunch of stuff comes up like those things we said. Oh and if your dog ever humps your arm, don't allow it bc that is their way of saying they r the leader. My dog used to do it when she was a pup and I didn't know what it meant til I looked it up, then after that if she did it again I'd put her on her back and make a growl in her face to show her I was the leader... She understood. She doesn't try that w me anymore. Haha. |

| Very good advice...I especially like the growling part. lol I definitely need to try that!! Zoe hasn't humped me but she does do it to her stuffed animals. I take them away when she does that. I figured she was trying to place herself one step up on the dog chain. She started that when she was only 7 weeks old...maybe even before i got her. I never thought of letting her lick my plate but so far she hasn't shown any interest in people food. I don't want her to be hyperglycemic so I keep her food in her bowl all the time. Also I will need to step into her space but have a feeling she won't back up so easily. She is getting better though. I love all these tips! If y'all think of anymore I'd love to see them. Thanks!!

| Oh..any pointers on how I can make her walk behind or beside me on a leash? I've been using one consistently since I got her but she strains at it.

| I took my baby to one of those Petco dog training puppy courses. They taught us to get one of those 6 foot leashes and connect to harness of course. U r supposed to teach them to walk on one side all the time. Each time they walk ahead of u you have to pull the leash back so they r behind u. It's really repetitive and takes dog awhile to learn. When they walk by your side or slightly behind u praise them. They have u initially try to make dog walk slightly behind u so they understand better. And each time u stop walking you're supposed to make the dog sit. So each time u start walking u say Zoe heel. When u stop u say Zoe sit. U can change the start word. The class used it bc it's not a word we use commonly. It takes a lot of practice. |

| I've tried walking Zoe for almost 2 months now (only in the yard as she hasn't had all her shots yet). But she actually walks me. I've tried repeatedly to get her behind me but she starts running all over and I wind up tangled in the leash. I've tried looping the leash around my hand so she only has a few feet of leeway but she objects and sometimes just sits and refuses to budge. Today I tethered her to me using 2 leashes..one tied around my waist and the other clipped to her harness. When she acts up I tighten the one around me so she gets only a few feet between me and her. Inside she has enough room to play or take a nap in her bed but I'm still trying to potty train her and I figured why not use the tether for both walking on a leash and potty training.

| ya it takes them awhile to learn, but if you are persistent, then they catch on eventually. I practiced inside my house with a leash. Its much easier for them that way first bc they are familiar with their surroundings. when you walk outside they have a lot more distractions and smells so they want to run around and sniff everything. its good your baby is young, you can teach her better. but some of the pups in my class that were too young kinda like your pup would just lay down in the middle of walking and not want to budge anymore. I think they are just too young thats why. all the other dogs would walk fine except for the one that was only a few weeks old. I got my dog in the winter so i never tried walking here when she was that young. they told us to always have them walk on one side to avoid them running all over back and forth. they also said not to put strain on the leash, bc their natural insticnt is to pull harder if they feel they are being pulled. they really really enforce this in class, b/c they said its the main way to show your dog you are the leader, since the leader always walks first. here i found a good video you can watch to teach you how to loose leash walk.... its not the exact same technique my class taught, but same concept. |

| Thanks for the video. I loved it when her little one continued next to her even after she dropped the leash. I hope I can eventually get to that point. I didn't think of walking inside the house to train her. That might work even better as dropping treats into the grass behind me will only cause Zoe to stop, sniff , sit, or lie down in the grass instead of walking. I really need to work on that technique. Thanks again.

| sure no prob. good luck. ya the way the girl in this vid teaches it looks nicer than tugging them back over and over as taught by petco... but that would take a whoooooooooooooooooooole lot of treats ahhahaha... i think my instructor didnt teach it that way bc she was kinda anti-treat lady. she felt that we should train the dog w/o treats bc that way they will do things to please us and not only if we have a treat. but its really hard to motivate a dog w/o using treats. well good luck with your training. |
