| Crate vs Play Pen When my husband and I are at work, we keep the door to our 11-week puppy's crate open to a 2' x 3' play pen area. The crate contains his bed, toys, water and crunchy food, while the play pen area has a wee wee pad and more toys. We did this so he would have room to play and not feel confined. At first it was ok, but last night when I arrived home, he trashed the area completely. Torn pads, food everywhere, play pen shifted, poo all over the place. I'm not sure if it was a bad day or what, but after talking to fellow dog owners, I'm thinking of putting him in the crate only while we are gone as this could actually be more comforting. Does anyone have any advice or have experienced something like this? Thanks for your help! |

| At 11 weeks, pups are crazy hyper and will do just about anything. For me, keeping the crated until their around 5/6 month while I'm gone is what works best. I've come a couple times and have even seen everything in their crates turned upside down Keeping your pup in a crate while your at work isn;'t bad as long as you provide your puppy with exercise and lots of attention when your home Mine are now 5 months old and they tend to sleep most of the day anyway now. They've gotten into a routine of being crated and using that as naptime...but when i get home..all heck breaks loose as all three run around like crazy with each other for an hour. Its so funny to watch. After the house is over, they are instant lap dogs. I'm going to need to limit my computer time at night because 3 on my lap these days is gettng a bit much in these chair LOL

| We are planning on using the playpen. I will let you know how is goes. We do have a crate as back up. I can see where you are coming from though with messing up the area.

| I use the playpen for my girls, and I used the crate at nite only when it was time to go to sleep, I did this until they were potty train. I have read here that some members use washable potty pads, maybe using this on your playpen so he will not torn the disposable ones, also maybe a good playtime will help him with his energy levels

| Thanks all for your advice and thoughts. We came home last night to a perfect area so maybe he was having a bad day- we all have those, right?! We do play with him often but he's a little puppy and just has high energy. I do wish I could play with him during the day, we're considering a puppy sitter during the day, but we'll see. |

| I use a crate for Duke. When I first got him I was bringing him to work daily with me since he was so small I new he couldn't hold it to long. Aside from the fact I didn't want to leave him. Once I started leaving him home I got him a little larger crate to make sure he had enough room (but not to much) and he's been perfect in there. Sounds like you have a nice set up though. Good luck.

| Oh how it is to be young! LOL I have Pixel's ex-pen attached TO his crate so he can curl up in the smaller area of his crate with his bed when he wants to be cozy, or run around in the pen part when he wants to play. Though I do think he sleeps all day I'm at work because often the treat filled kong, ball, etc that I leave him are untouched |
