| matted hair how to fix it I know it probably been answered a hundred times. Anyway I am going to ask. My six month old puppy is having a problem with mats. I bought some mane and tail conditioner, is it ok to use on a dog. I thought I heard that you can use human conditioner on a dog. Someone let me know if there are any insider tricks on keeping mats out of their coats. Any help would be appreciated. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | his coat is changing from puppy to adult. At this point you really need to brush him every day, sometimes multiple times to keep the mats out. Or you can shave him and start over. Mane and Tail is fine, but there are better products to use. i bought it once and didn't see anything fabulous about it.

| Baby powder helps with knots.. have not done this.. but have seen it done.. and please comb all the time..one teenie knot can be so easy to get out.. but that teenie one can sure turn big in no time.. then they scratch and make it worse.. I have used the mane and tail cream rinse... but the buddy wash is excellent.. it makes grooming so easy... anne |

| Shake a little corn starch on the mat when it's dry, rub it into the mat and gently comb out a little at a time. The corn starch will help detangle the mat. Once you have combed through them you can bathe and dry like you normally would. Everyday combing or brushing with a pin brush will help keep the mats away. Good luck... |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | From what I've read Mane and Tail isn't that effective, I used another horse product called Cowboy Magic Detangler when Joey was a puppy, and I thought it worked great. I would use it under his arms, especially after wearing clothing, and before the bath, I used it all over, it's best to get all mats out before bathing. A small amount of detangler used between your thumb and forefinger on the mat going in a circular motion seems to dissolve the mat. Some people use human conditioner or the mat, and some people swear by regular cornstarch. I can't emphasize enough that this should be done before bathing, once wet, mats become much more difficult to remove. There are matting combs that have a blade that cuts through the mat, and these should be used with caution. The easiest way to avoid mats is to brush daily, following with a comb that is placed next to the skin to insure all tangles are out. I always followed shampooing with a good conditioner and put a dab, on those underarm areas. Joey outgrew the matting, but I still use a conditioner after every shampoo, and of course brush daily. Mats that are close to the skin often have to be shaved, but this is probably best left to professionals, and those who know what they are doing.
