| Nail Clipper Suggestions - Dremmel type? Hello everyone. I just got a new yorkie puppy over the weekend. She is 9 weeks old and her nails are quite long and pinchy. I'd like to start getting her used to trimming. Do you have any suggestions for nail clippers? Is there a brand you recommend? Does anyone use the Dremmel type that just files the nails or are those not so good? Please let me know. Any help is greatly appreciated! |

| Lots of people use a Dremmel file but I prefer the Peticure. It's pretty much just like the Dremmel but it has a protective guard over it so that the hair doesn't get caught in the drill and it also catches dust. I really like mine! You can find it here Peticure.com | The Official Site - pamper your pet with a peticure!

| When my babies were 9 weeks I just used a regular human nail clipper on their nails - the doggie ones are overkill since their nails are so tiny and thin. Now that my babies are grown I have a scissors-type of dog nail clipper and a Pedicure for filing any sharp edges.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I have the Peti-paws, but after taking Joey to his breeder for a grooming, she said that I was allowing the nails to get too long. Watching her use the clipper, made me realize how much faster it was. She was able to get him to lie on her lap, while she just clipped away. The important thing when clipping or filing is to hold the nail base firmly, the wiggling action is what hurts them. The clippers with a safety guard are the safest, but it's really nerve racking and I'm still learning to do it. It's so much faster than filing, and if you can learn to use them, you'll save yourself lots of time. I had to wrap Joey in a towel, and stick one paw out to do it, but I've been able to cut his front paws twice now, he seems to keep his back paws trimmed short enough because he walks a lot on concrete and this files the back nails. Just cut the tip, and if you do it monthly, you'll probaly never need to do more than this.

| I use a Dremmel for my pug dog and she doesn't mind it one bit. Missy won't have it though, so I cut hers with human nail cutters since she's still quite little. I just take the tips off each week.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Maybe doing it each week would be better, I get so worked up thinking about it. Thanks for the "tip."

I've been thinking about trying the peticure or pedi-paws but just haven't gotten around to purchasing one yet.

| I have the dremel one and love it. I push her foot/nails through a nylon stocking first to make sure that I don't get any hair. |

| We're not having much luck with the Ped-i-Paws, but I saw a unit at Pet Smart that has some kind of gauge on it to identify where the quick is so you don't cut it. If it looks good I'll report back |

| I've been using one that looks identical to this clipper forever since I got my cat back in 2000. Cat, dog, what's the difference. LOL. It's still sharp enough to this day. I take the tips off weekly or sometimes skip a week when I'm feeling lazy. I've also had the vet do it (daddy holding her, mommy keeping a liver treat between her fingers teasing her with it while the Dr. did the trimming real quick and only drew the slightest bit of blood off one quick so it didn't even bother her) and she used the same type of clipper! It was amazing how she turned from a wriggle worm to instantly still as a stone forgetting about her paws/arm while trying to chew off mommy's fingers. So far I've only tried taking her to one groomer to get her nails trimmed and that didn't turn out, as a matter of fact, after that incident (2-3 nails were cut to the quick) I had to start over getting her to accept my clipping of her nails again. I just did a few toes at a time and then gradually upped the length of the torture and she seems fine with it now once mommy earned her trust back. My girl's so smart, she knows the clipper by sight! So I think it helped when she got to watch her favourite chew toy's nails being trimmed by mommy without putting up a fight. I usually see people/groomers with that other kind where you insert the nail into that roundish hole and cut forward or what have you. My parents got that other kind years ago for our family dog and it never worked out. I also purchased the Pedi-Paws but have yet to get her used to the noise it makes. The vet tech told me with the way my girl's nails are, I'm probably better off just using a human nail filer and filing her nails rather than using a dremmel. She also said that the daily walks on concrete must be doing a really good job in keeping her nails in check and of course, to continue clipping it the way I've been doing. I mentioned to her how the groomer said to me that the nails are too long when you hear them hitting the hard surfaces, but she said it's fine and there's no way to get it that short now. |
