Senior Yorkie Talker | retractable leashes does anyone use a retractable leash for your furbaby? I have a normal leash but i want a retractable one so he can run further when we are out in the open. (we have nice paths and fields near my house where we like to walk). is it not a good idea for them to run far away even if they are on a leash? how long should i get it cause they have them in varying lengths...input please!

My Little Man! Donating Member | I use one. I think its 16 feet long. I dont use it all the time, only when I want Maxi to run around. If you decide to get it make sure to practice with it at home first. It is not that easy at first to maneuver it if you need to pull your furkid towards you.

| I have had 2 different ones. The first on I got like at a Dollar Store and it was horrible. It was really noisy when it retracted and kinda scared Lucky. The second one I got at Walmart. It is a 16 ft. and the handle is small. It is very smooth and quite. Thats the only one I use now.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I use retractable leashes (the smallest one) with my two yorkies - at the same time. I prefer them over the traditional type. Now, I've tried using a bigger version with my son's boxer and about lost a finger one day. It was wrapped around my index finger and "Cash" bolted on me. The leash cord pulled out of the holder so quickly, it did cut my finger! So, be careful if you have a larger dog.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Your question was one of my first questions on Yorkietalk. The instructions with the retractable leash really made them sound dangerous. I bought the smallest, I think the cord is 6 foot, but it really is too short, and the small one doesn't fit the hand that well. I bought the one with the 12 foot cord, and love it. It also has a locking feature, and you can use it as a regular leash. Practice with it in the open and even if you get the longer cord model, choose it for the lightest weight dog you can, I think that's 30-50 pounds. It's great no tangling ever. I would get one with an even longer cord if I could find it.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Lol, 26 feet long, oh I definitely want one of those, we have some really wide open spaces, and he loves to chase the ducks.

| I use the standard 4 feet and I still hold it a couple feet from them. I want them to walk beside me so I can quickly pick them up if another dog tries to get at them. I like the brisk walking. On rainy days they go on the tread mill.

| I have a 10' retractable attached to a regular walk in harness/leash. I can keep Gucci close to me with the leash, and then when we have open area, I release "some" of the retractable leash. It works great for us and he knows when to "reel" in! |
