Therapy Dog Donating Member | OMG - I was just at the vet this past Monday with Izzy to have a look at her teeth (that's another story...lol), but anyway while I was in the vet's waiting area (he has his clinic divided in half where cats go to one side and doggies go to the other). On the doggie side they have that huge digital floor scale where I normally just place Izzy on to get weighed. Well for some reason I didn't place her on this scale - that goodness I didn't. While I was standing holding Izzy for our visit - I saw this young woman with this puppy sitting behind me (I was standing at the check-in counter) and I overheard her telling the vet tech that she was bringing her puppy in because it was throwing up and having bloody stools. Well then one of the other vets immediately came and whisked her to a totally different area of the clinic. Then I see the vet tech immediately take a bleach/water solution right to the scale and start mopping everywhere. They call us into the examining room and told us not to worry - they "think" this puppy might have Parvo and they were not taking any chances. Thank goodness I didn't put Izzy on that floor scale or put her down for any reason - she was in my arms the entire time and we were not in direct contact with this poor little puppy. I never knew the symptoms of Parvo until just then. I was freaking in the examining room but our vet was most reassuring that Izzy would be fine. I just hope that poor puppy is fine. PS: they brought in a kitty scale to weigh Izzy so she was not in contact with anything nor were we that close to the puppy.

| It is beyond me why owners would get the idea that its OK to take a puppy to the dog park when they haven' t had their complete set of vaccinations. They are basically endangering their puppy, not to mention what could happen amongst the other dogs. Also I think because of the growing popularity of pet ownership, people don't realize all the medical responsibility involved. |

| Oh Cyndi, What a lucky thing! It makes me shiver just thinking about it. Adie got sick with a nasty virus the day after we got her and she ended up giving it to my other two dogs! Anyway, I almost lost my baby and spent a fortune on her before all was said and done. It wasn't parvo but it was nasty. I have NEVER let Adie down at the vets. There are always sick dogs going in there! |

| My Dog Park too! Hey my Dog Park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.......was "Closed" for 3 days after a 6 week old Puppy had died of Parvo! They sprayed the so-called contaminated open areas etc. But there was no article or news coverage at all, in fact the Officials in charge here covered it up! It made them change certain Rules @ the Dog Park and made everyone in our Neighborhood more aware and conscious. Vaccinations are very important especially if your Pets go to alot of Public places. |

| Parvo well... I don't take her to dog parks but my BT got parvo after being totally vaccinated. So... it can happen... even w/ responsible owners.... it happen to us on a trip to arkansas... so luckily my house wasn't affected (we stay in ark all summer). |

| It makes you never want to take your dog to the park. I get nervous taking my dog out in the neighborhood when I see all the irresponsible complacent owners out there. When I took my dog to the vet because he had a little hacking, I made sure I did not put him down anywhere or let another dog play with him for fear of getting another dog sick without knowing what was the problem with mine. It turned out it wasn't anything but even vet clinics aren't very careful. |

| That is a shame we have to worry about socializing our dogs in public places...

| Dog parks are not the only place a puppy can pick up diseases like Parvo and others before all shots are given. I had a dog get parvo when she was a little over a year old and just had her second booster. It was not deadly but she was very sick and had some bloody diarrhea. I never let my girls feet hit the floor at the Vet. or in any pet store, or any store for that matter. Even a person can track the Parvo virus into a home or place of business where a dog can walk. Each time at the motel or traveling that they go potty, I always wipe their feet afterwards with alcohol wipes. I don't know if that is as effective as bleach, but bleach isn't an option. |
