[News] Hit and Run Driver Kills Senior Citizen and Her Yorkie I hope they find that bad, bad person!!! I feel so bad for the granddaughter, losing her Yorkie and her Grandma at the same time due to some reckless speeder! --- Pittsburg, CA - Tu Thi Tran and her family dog, Rusty, were taking a walk Tuesday evening in Pittsburg, just as they do every day, when someone driving a Chrysler New Yorker ran them down and took off without stopping or calling for help. The 79-year-old grandmother was most likely in the crosswalk on busy Stoneman Avenue, police said, when the car struck her and the 6-year-old Yorkshire terrier from behind and fled. They both died at the scene. Tran was taking care of Rusty for her granddaughter, who received the dog for Christmas. "She looked after him for me while I was in college in San Diego," said Shaina Seivers, 21. "She walked him for about an hour every day." The hit-and-run accident happened at about 5:20 p.m. at the intersection of Stoneman and Meadowbrook Circle, a corner that resident Zoran Maslarevic says is extremely dangerous for pedestrians. The busy thoroughfare is surrounded by two schools, a day care operation and a Christian center. There are no stop signs nearby and poor lighting in the evening, and traffic often speeds through, Maslarevic said. "It's a freeway after 3 p.m.," he said, as a car accelerated away from the intersection nearby, its tires screeching. "See that. See that. These people drive crazy. They are so fast and so loud I have to turn my television up." Neighbors said Tran was courteous and always smiled. Her family said she was cautious. "The car must have been flying," said Seivers, who took walks with her grandmother when she came home for the holidays. "She would always look both ways and only cross in the crosswalk." Residents said they hoped the city would do something about the speeding problems on the street. "It's so sad," Maslarevic said. "She was so petite, and there aren't even any skid marks. Something has got to be done about this." Pittsburg City Engineer Joe Sbranti, who visited the scene Wednesday, said the accident was unfortunate but added that there are crossing signs and streetlights in the area. "We have reports on speeding on almost every east-west street in the city, " he said. "There is so much traffic out here that it is not uncommon to have complaints." Investigators are trying to reconstruct the accident with evidence from the scene. Police had not yet estimated how fast the car was going or exactly where Tran had been hit. Evidence at the scene allowed police to identify the car as a dark burgundy Chrysler New Yorker, either 1990 or 1991 model year. Police ask anyone with information about the hit and run to call their tip line at (925) 427-7369. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cg...AGA89TABU1.DTL

Some of those news stories are so depressing ! Thats really sad about the Grandmother and her Yorkie getting hit. It would be nice to see more " HAPPY YORKIE STORIES" for a change, please? The therapy dog news is a "Good Example" of a happy story. The holidays are coming fast and there is a lot of sad things that happen, but please keep the posts on the positive side. Thanks Just a suggestion. Last edited by Yorkie24U; 11-18-2004 at 07:00 PM. Reason: addition.

I'll try, but just like the 'real news,' usually only bad news gets written up and widespread...

I don't really need to read BAD NEWS on this form, don't you think keeping it HAPPY NEWS only would be best? This isn't a REAL NEWS FORM, I thought this was suppose to be a pleasant place to come, its a YORKIE FORM. I know there is already a lot of BAD NEWS in the newspaper & on tv every day, and to come to this form and read MORE BAD NEWS just adds to an already depressing news day. Thats just my opionion, I may be the only one in here that thinks that way, I don't now, I'm sorry. I just won't click on the BAD NEWS. I do enjoy the photos, Yorkie Stories, and the health/foods issues, etc. that are part of the form, all are very interesting. I especially enjoy reading about the Joy & Love that each persons Yorkies brings to them. Last edited by Yorkie24U; 11-18-2004 at 10:12 PM.

UPDATE: --- Pittsburg police arrested a suspect Friday in the hit-and-run death of a 79-year-old woman as she walked her dog. Jvance Davis, 18, of Pittsburg was taken into custody at about 3:30 p.m. in the death of Tu Thi Tran, who was killed Tuesday evening as she tried to cross Stoneman Avenue near Meadowbrook Circle. The family dog, a 6-year-old Yorkshire terrier named Rusty, was also killed. Davis admitted that he had struck Tran from behind and fled the scene because he was scared, said Pittsburg police Lt. Brian Addington. The burgundy Chrysler New Yorker that struck Tran was found Thursday night by a resident on Goldenhill Drive in Pittsburg, Addington said. The resident said the car had not been there in the morning. Evidence from the car and interviews led police to Davis, who could be formally charged next week, Addington said. Davis lived a few blocks from the crash site, police said. Tran was taking care of Rusty for her granddaughter, who received the dog for Christmas. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cg...AGF39UUV41.DTL

I'm so glad they caught the person responsible and hope hes brought to justice. Funny thing though, there are lots of those kinds of people in the world that just don't care, and there will be other Grandmothers and other Rustys that will have to pay in the process. Its sad !

Well I live here in Pittsburg. And I know Jvance from school. And believe me, he is a good person and I will defend him on that. It's unfortunate of what happen...but I trully know he didn't mean what happen. Pittsburg IS a tight community. We are just a small one that has recently been bombarded with so much traffic because of the new highways and overpasses they're building. Yeah, he shouldn't have been speeding or kept on driving. But it was an accident. And I'm still shock of what happen...and coincedently, but sadly, Jvance lost his friend in a car accident several months ago. So to know...sorry this is a yorkie site and you want to read happy news. But I passed by on here and notice this topic....
