| [News] Tiny Protector Dies In Attack LINDALE - After being attacked by a neighbor's pit bull and losing her little companion, a Smith County woman is pushing for stricter leash laws. Polly Scott said she had taken Baily, her 5-year-old papillon, outside and was playing with him about two weeks ago when a neighbor's pit bull suddenly attacked her. "The pit bull came out of nowhere and lunged at me," she said. "The dog was on top of me and both my hands were in his mouth as I tried to fight him off." Ms. Scott said Baily ran to her aid even though she screamed for the dog to stay away. "He (Baily) ran up and took the attention off me and the pit bull grabbed him up and shook him," she said. Her swollen fingers clasped the photos of the little black and white dog she called a hero. In one photo he had a ball at his feet and in another he turned toward the camera with a whimsical look."He was more like a kid, he wasn't raised like a dog," she said. "I took him everywhere with me and he was just like my child. Once I took him in the restaurant in my bag and got up from the table. When I came back, a lady next to me said, 'Your bag is moving.'" After the attack, she was transported to East Texas Medical Center where doctors treated her injuries, which she said could not be stitched, but had to be left open to heal. The pit bull was put to sleep and tested for rabies. Ms. Scott said another pit bull from the same owner attempted to attack her daughter just days later. Another neighbor shot and killed that dog. Ms. Scott said she is all for the proposed law before legislators that could land a dog owner, whose pet injures another person, in jail for 20 years. The bill by Rep. Dan Gattis, R-Georgetown, would make it a third degree felony - punishable by two to 10 years in prison and an optional $10,000 fine - if an owner failed to secure a dog that makes an unprovoked attack. If the victim dies, the crime would be a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. For a dog owner to be charged with a crime under current law, the dog must have been classified as dangerous from a previous incident - a provision critics call "one free bite." "If a pit bull attacks once, it will attack again," Ms. Scott said. The Gattis bill eliminates the dangerous dog requirement. In Smith County, several people have been attacked by dogs and they have all questioned why there are no leash laws in the county. Ms. Scott wants county laws to be stricter and owners made to pay huge fines for roaming dogs and dogs that attack innocent people and pets. "I don't take her (Taylor, her other papillon) outside without someone going with me now," she said. "My daughter said she will not bring my grandkids over here anymore, and I really don't blame her." Kenneth Dean covers police, fire, public safety organizations. | How Horrible! That's just horrible news. It simply goes against reason why there are no laws requiring mandatory screening for people who want to own fighting dogs and dangerous dogs like pit bulls. Not only should the potential owners be screened, they should be required to complete K9 good citizen classes with their dogs once purhased, to garantee that the dogs are trained and properly socialized (with humans and other pets). We all have to pass exams and training for driving a car... there should be something similar with potentially life-endangering dogs, too. And a regular "refreshment course" throughout the ownership period would not be a bad idea. Poor pap. mbfleur |

| I couldn't even read all of that!! That is sooo terrible! Our little dogs (no matter what breed), are such protectors of us! There needs to be some sort of plan of action for all these cases that we have been hearing about lately w/ big dogs attacking people and other pets. That is nonesense and the owners should be held accountable for EVERYTHING!! - Nothing can replace the loss loved one...BUT the owners of these dogs should pay!!! Severely!!!

| Pitbulls attack because the majority of them are trained to be fighters. The breed in particular is not malicious as one thinks. It depends on how it was trained as a puppy. I've read somewhere that pitbulls are banned in a particular city in Texas but I'm not sure what city it is. |

| Don't condemn the Breed! A friend of my daughter has a pitbull that is one of the most loving sweetest dogs I know. It loves all dogs, big and small, and it's bestfriend is a cat named Felix. PLEASE don't condemn Pitbulls.... it is the idiots that abuse them, teach them to fight, and think it is "cool" to have a dangeous dog. Those are the ones that we need to "Put to sleep"!!

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Maybe it is me, but whenever I read of a child being attacked, or another dog, it is almost always a pitbull. Back in the days when I worked for Child Protective Services, many a time a worker was threatened by clients' pitbulls; children were attacked by their neighbors' pitbulls--everyone on the block seemed to have one to keep away the police, welfare, social workers, probation; etc. It may be bad breeders or bad owners, but for every "lovable" pitbull there are more that aren't so good |

| the only thing i hate is that it was a pit that attacked. I feel bad for the lady and it sucks and I don't care AT ALL what kind of dog you own, they should ALL (yes, even our precious pint sized pooches) should be behind a fence. I love pits. Always have, always will. There are no bad dogs, just stupid, unkowledgable, idiotic, and irresponcible owners. Obviously, this pit's owner was one of them. What a sad, sad story

| The reason why most dog attacks are sited as being a pit bull attack is because of the ignorance of society and the hype of a good story by the media... As a matter of FACT there are more dog bites by most other breeds more than pit bulls. Please see www.hugabull.com. the other thing that you can look at is (find the pit bull) type that in your browser and it should come up. This goes to show that there are many breeds that look close in appearance that get deemed a pit bull therefore the poor reputation. The common denominator in all dog bites is the owner, not properly socializing dogs (any dog). Or mistreatment causing fear aggression. I have owned bully breeds all of my life and have never had a problem because I properly socialize my dogs. My girl Addie is good with little or big dogs and has even backed off from other aggresive small dogs... My goat (pygme) head butts her all of the time and Addie just takes it. The other day my rabbit jumped up and bit her on the nose and all she did was cry. and my guinea pig sleeps on the bed with her. Last but certainly not least my Yorkie owns the food dish and my "pit Bull" waits for her to be done before eating.. The moral of the story is all dogs have the ability to bite and it is all of our resposibility to monitor our dogs (small or big) to make sure that people and pets are safe.. Socialize Socialize Socialize your dogs anytime possible it is your responsibiltiy to your animal and your neighbours. |

| I feel worse for the poor Pit Bull. It's terrible owner taught it to attack, but the animal had to pay with its life. |

| Trowell you are so right about any dog and socialization. I took my VERY pregnant Lexie to the Vet to have a weight check this morning and while I was sitting in the waiting room a young girl brought in her pitbull. My instinct was to hide Lexie by turning my back, and the girl said, "Sam is very sweet." I turned and looked and Sam was sitting right at her foot and looking but not moving a muscle toward Lexie. They came and got Lex for her check-up and I sat down and Sam was soooo sweet. He did not come over to me until his master said it was OK and then was so gentle and nice. The girl and I talked for about 5 minutes and we discussed this very thing. Lex was brought back to me and Sam never moved from the floor by his owner. Lexie was nervous and shaking so I left, but with a very different feeling about pitbulls.******** Oh, by the way...Lexie is over 10 pounds and has at least 6 puppies all of good size growing inside her. I promise more on this subject as it is only Day 41!!
