[News] Rottweiler Savages Yorkie in Front of Shoppers - YorkieTalk.com Forums

UK - AN OUT-OF-CONTROL rottweiler mauled a Yorkshire terrier just yards from a Coventry supermarket in front of stunned shoppers.

The nine-year-old terrier, Zoe, needed an operation following her ordeal close to the Somerfield store, off Winsford Avenue, in Allesley Park.

Owner William Brown, aged 74, of Brookside Avenue, Whoberley, said the rottweiler, which he believed must have weighed 14 stone, went for his dog.

He said passers-by had to help the owner, a man in his 30s, pull the rampaging dog away from Zoe after Mr Brown was knocked to the ground.

Mr Brown, a retired self-employed builder, said: "It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life and one I would never, ever want to repeat."

It was about noon on Sunday, February 26, when Mr Brown was walking Zoe past Somerfield, from Whitaker Road, round to Winsford Court.

He said: "The rottweiler's owner had two dogs - the other was a bull terrier I think - and as they got close to us the rottweiler pulled towards Zoe.

"I pulled her away but the rottweiler was clearly too strong for his owner because before I knew it he was on to my Yorkshire terrier.

"I was trying to ward it off with my walking stick but I toppled over and the rottweiler seemed to be going for me as well."

Mr Brown, a grandfather-of-six, said: "Some people nearby came and helped the man pulled the rottweiler back and I was so terrified I was completely disorientated.

"It was terrifying and I think that if it had been a child with a dog they could have been seriously injured by such a large animal behaving in that way."

Mr Brown said, following the incident, the other dog owner took his pets back to his car and returned to apologise.

But Mr Brown didn't catch the rottweiler owner's name or take a phone number. He is keen to get in touch with him because he is concerned the rottweiler could attack other dogs.

Mr Brown added: "I feel I've been lucky - other people might not be the same."

Zoe underwent an operation at the PDSA PetAid hospital, in Barkers' Butts Lane, Coundon, for a dislocated muscle, and was treated for a broken rib.

She also needed stitches and is recovering at home. Mr Brown urged the owner of the rottweiler to get in touch with him on 07779 602 464.

Oh my gosh how horrible. the owner of that dog should have done more than say sorry.
I think if they can not control their dogs they should not have them out in public.

When you walk your Yorkie, you should always have pepper spray with you.

I just came back from a walk in the park with my Biewer. He is not quite 7 months old and only weighs 5.5 lbs. He would not stand a chance against a large dog. While we were in the park, I saw some kids with a rottweiler off his leash. They were playing ball. I went out of my way to avoid them, just as I always do when I see someone with a large dog. I stayed far from them and kept a close eye to make sure that their dog did not follow. Like always, I had my pepper spray ready just in case.

You cannot assume that the owner of a large dog will have that dog under control. Your dog's life can depend on it.

pixelate, You hit the nail on the head...

When you have your Yorkie outside, in your yard or in the park or on the beach wherever you are, You must be extra carefull about what else is outside with you. Other dogs, cats, coyotes, etc... Your little guy or girl is helpless against most larger types of animals. And you must at all times be AWARE. Your dogs life depends on YOU....

Sorry if I sound a little harsh, but Ive seen and heard of way to many small dogs killed or injured at the arms length of there owner. KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN !!!!

How sad!!! My good friend was walking with her 4 yr old granddaugther, and her two Yorkies (Mama and daughter!) and a larger, agreesive breed dog attacked the Yorkies! Sadly, one was killed and the other needed exstensive surgeries.

Stories like these are such a reminder (albeit sad and terrifying!) that our precious littles ones need our protection.

Pepper Spray might sound like a good idea but it can easily blow back into your face or your dogs'. Certain breeds have a very high threshold of pain and this may only aggravate them. I deliver the mail and we had a segment on this in training. Sometimes I carry a collaspible steel baton with me, in case I have a run in like the one in the story. Even after you pick up your little dog, how are you going to keep the big one away without gettinig bitten? A man I see takes his yorkie for a walk on the beach with a golf club. Good for a multitude of uses.

This so scary. I never even thought of these things until I got Dori and Yogi. Now whenever we are out, I won't even let a big dog get within 3 feet of us. I just feel like its a 50/50 chance to see if the bigger dog will be aggressive enough to hurt them or not and that not worth fooling with. One snap and they could be dead or seriously hurt. People with larger, aggressive dogs always have the advantage in this area and its not fair that they don't keep them leashed and try and keep them away from OUR small ones.

The other dog is certainly dangerous. The owner is obviously irresponsible. How horrible!

My baby was staying with a friend and he had guard dogs. You kinda need them in South Africa. They kept the dogs in the back yard and Jessie only went in the front. One day Jessie followed the lady out and the big dog went nuts, broke down the gate and attacked my girl. She wasn't bleeding or anything but about 30 minutes later she died from a heart attack. So even if your pup dosn't get hurt doesn't mean they are safe. I was in the States when this happened. It was the worst time of my life. Anyway, I just wanted to share how dangerous it is out there.

My yorkie was not himself, very lethargic and lazy, so I took him to the vet and they did blood work on him. The tests results came back saying his thyroid was low. They gave him thyroid medicine and he was starting to get back to his old self and then he was attacked by two dogs, one german shepherd/rott mix and a chow. I don't know how he survived it. He had multiple wounds on his upper body and his chest area. Very close to his lung, but nothing real serious. All the xrays came back ok. They put him on an anti-inflamatory. However, since the attack he has been very depressed. He doesn't play with his toys anymore. He is a different dog. He is acting like he did before the attack. I took him back to the vet and he checks out ok. Any idea what I can do to get my little boy back to his old self? Could something else be wrong and maybe the thyroid medicine is making him that way? Please help!

This is so sad to hear. Unfortunatly I live next door to an aggressive Rottwiler. It has gotten off of it's chain and been in my yard. It attacked one of my cocker spaniels through the wood privacy fence. I have a large hole in the fence now but luckily I saved my dog. If it would've been my yorkie or maltese they would've been gonners.

My little SaSHA was attacked by a neighbors Golden retriever! I was at my daughters house putting up curtains- someone left the front door open and little Sasha ran across the street. Neighbor had left her male and female out - not tied and no fence. Ten minuites earlier< I had just heard from another neighbor that this female golden got mean to other females-when the dogs were out together roaming the neighborhood.
I saw little Sasha from the window run across the street- barking(now these dogs already knew Sasha) I ran screaming and yelling out the door after her- the female had her in her mouth and shaking my little one-when she saw me comming and screaming-she dropped Sasha and Sasha ran back to our house. What a trauma!
It ended with Sasha only being brused - very sore and sad for the next 2 weeks. I am so lucky, I cannot believe she lived through this- and have learned my lesson- not to trust even the nicest looking dogs.

Lesson Learned!
