| [News] Hoof & Woof: Dogs Hit Streets in Fort Lauderdale Phyllis O'Hara, her husband, Thomas and their four small dogs sleep together in the family's queen-sized bed in Margate. ''Personally, I think my wife is trying to squeeze me out the room,'' Thomas joked. The O'Haras' biggest dog, Max, a chocolate lab, has a little more wiggle room at night. He sleeps on the floor in their 10-year-old daughter's room. The couple on Saturday walked Max and their four small dogs -- Bailey, Princess, Rocky and Cody -- in the 16th annual Walk for the Animals in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The event was a charity fundraiser for The Humane Society of Broward County. More than 4,500 people and more than 1,000 dogs -- one hobbling on two legs and a few ambling on three -- made the 1.25-mile trek. The walk started at Esplanade Park, continued along the New River, and ended back at the park. ''I have never seen so many dogs in one place in my life,'' said Susan McCauley, a Humane Society volunteer who recently adopted a Yorkshire terrier she named Maggie Grace. Last year's walk raised $385,000, according to Anthony Priore, director of administrative services for the Humane Society. This year's goal was $420,000. The final tally on Saturday was $430,000, Priore said. ''That'll buy a heck of a lot of dog bones,'' Priore joked, adding that the Humane Society was grateful for the show of support from volunteers and the community. Participants collect and donate money in person and through web sites to the humane society prior to the walk and on the day of the event. They then take part in the fundraiser as a show of support for the organization. The event drew from supporters like the O'Haras. Phyllis O'Hara, 47, with a few co-workers at Comcast, raised $700. Thomas O'Hara, 38, a project manager for a construction company, raised $100. Some people walked their dogs just for fun on Saturday. James Tussey, 64, sat outside his condo overlooking the New River with Brazil, a pug. Tussey, 64, a Chicago native, found out about the Humane Society's walk after returning from burying his father in the Midwest. ''Or else we would be raising money. We would have,'' he said, kissing Brazil. Along the walk route, there were stops set up with bottled water for the walkers, plus cold towels and kiddie pools for the dogs to dip in. Some dogs had it easy; their owners pushed them in strollers. And some of the dog's names were catchy. Among them were the fashion designer-inspired Gucci and Dolce, two greyhounds that belonged to Kat Fredericks, 30, a personal trainer who lives in Fort Lauderdale. Scott Becker, a CEO of a software development company in North Miami Beach, and Brian Lunn, CEO of a laboratory blood testing company in Hollywood, strummed guitars for walkers. ''When that dog comes around,'' Becker sang, riffing on the chorus of Green Day's ``When I Come Around.'' Said Lunn, 36: ``This is the best gig I have ever played in my life.'' http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald...y/14020148.htm |
