[News] Yorkie left paralyzed after saving toddler faces multiple surgeries DICKINSON, Texas – We have an update on a Yorkie left paralyzed while protecting a 3-year-old Dickinson boy from a “ferocious” dog. Ezio, the 11-pound Yorkie, suffered a broken neck, spinal cord and crushed trachea when the dog attacked him. Shannon Long said her neighbor’s dog broke through a plywood fence last Friday and aggressively approached her grandson in their backyard. Ezio charged toward the much larger dog to protect the boy. “The dog was 10 times the size of Ezio. This big giant dog, if it stands up, is as tall as me,” explained Long. “The dog is ferocious.” When the toddler ran inside, the dog turned its attention to the Yorkie. “Ezio was trying to get that big dog,” said 3-year-old Gavin Clark. “He saved my life.” “So he picks Ezio by his neck and lifts him and shakes and shakes and shakes and throws him down,” said Long. Ezio was rushed to a veterinarian’s office where it cost $5,000 to keep him alive. “We don’t have a lot of money. We have three kids and two grandkids,” said Long. “My daughter emptied her bank account. My husband and I emptied our bank account. The vet said it would cost at least another $10,000 to give Ezio a shot at walking again. “The doctor said, ‘Well, you’ll have to put him down,’” cried Long. “I just can’t do that. He saved Gavin’s life, and I can’t give up on his.” The family has set up a site to raise donations and over $23,000 has been collected so far. Ezio had surgical scope testing under anesthesia Monday and faces a number of surgeries in the coming weeks. Click here if you would like to contribute to Ezio’s recovery. Ezio now has his own Facebook page if you’d like to follow his progress. Yorkie left paralyzed after saving toddler faces multiple surgeries | khou.com Houston |
This lady and her dog have collected over $25,000.00 for her little Yorkie! She has all kinds of people contacting her for vqarious sums of money, so dog related requests and some apparently from people in the community needing money.... Then there are the people that contributed to the cause, have seen her now paying for other dogs vaccinations and heartworm meds, and they are concerned in her effort to "paw it forward", she is using money that was sent to make sure Ezio's extensive medical care will be paid for, is now going to help others in the community. Such a compassionate gesture, but her own dog, the hero of the story, the one that moved all of us to send her money, will find himself short on cash once again, a year from now, when additional medical bills are incurred. I had emailed her and suggested she put that money in an account for Ezio, Hero Yorkie, and then when HE is 100% and does not need any more surgeries, or therapy a year or so down the road, THEN she could consider "pawing it forward", through reputable sources, like her vet or I suggested YHR for donations, especially since YHR is in her community. We will see where this ends up. Ezio seems to be doing much better....successful surgeries, so far, and now needing therapy for curling under foot on the weak left side of his body....He is so precious!. |
Wow what a story |
Oh how sad. Bless his heart and I surely do hope he recovers. |
thank you for sharing. I like the page and wish him a full recovery what a lil hero. |
What a brave little man!! It's wonderful so many kind people came together to help pay for his full recovery. |
This brought tears to my eyes. These yorkies are very protective. I hope that the owner does think about his future and the long road I'm sure that is ahead of him. God bless him! |
Please let the owners of Ezio know that my 3 lb Yorkie was attacked by a Welsh Corgie in the same manner and we elected to treat her with acupuncture. It was a miracle! She made a full recovery but it took her 4 months to do so. We saved thousands by going this route. Hoping for a good outcome for Ezio. |
This is the first I've heard of this! It breaks my heart to think of that poor little dog, suffering so much, just because of his love and desire to protect his human. I will keep track of this, and will donate for future medical care, when the need arises. I can't help but think how devastating this has been to the poor little dog, as well as his owners. My prayers will be for a full recovery for little Ezio. |
What a tear jerker! I'm glad he's getting the care he needs! |
little hero! Prayers your way from Colorado. |
Wow, just saw a video on Ezio's facebook page and he's up and walking; check the July 31st update. https://www.facebook.com/ezioheroyorkie The pup looks like he's doing great! |
oh that poor baby! I pray that he recovers! My heart breaks at this story, what a brave little boy to defend the child! |
So glad to hear he is doing well! He is a hero! |
Little Dog; Big Personality :yorkiej: The dog risked his life for his friend. Even some humans would not attack a murderous person to save someone because they are scared. This dog is a saint and I hope he has a very good recovery and gets to spend the rest of his life with his family! :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:bravo::bravo::bravo : |
