Rabies Alert - Houston area!! I was at my vet today and saw an alert from one of the counties....the link is below. What is interesting (and scary) is that there are quite a few confirmed cases all around this area. Rabies Alert For Our Area! | Houston PetTalk From the site: Montgomery County Animal Control has received a second confirmed case of rabies from an indigenous wildlife animal in northwest Montgomery County since January. The first confirmed rabid animal was a skunk that tested positive on January 6, 2011 and the second confirmed case was a fox that tested positive on May 6, 2011. There have been 3 other confirmed cases of rabies in skunks in the adjacent counties. There was one skunk reportedly in Grimes County and two skunks in northern most portion of Harris County, near Hockley. The distance between the two confirmed cases in Montgomery County was 5.5 miles (see Map). |
This is scary. We have had 8 rabid skunks in our area. Seems to be a problem that is spreading. Don't worry, my beagles are working hard at controlling the skunk population. :D If they come into our yard, they don't leave it the same way. |

It's that time of here here too. Every year there are reports of rabid bats and other wildlife in my area. This is an excellent reason to make sure that your dogs are all vaccinated against rabies. I would never want mine to even have a slight chance of coming in contact with a rabid animal and not be properly vaccinated. |

It is exactly why I posted it. I know some people think that rabies is not a problem and don't vaccinate. Playing with fire. |
Many vets are doing the rabies shots at a discount right now. My vet did both of the beagles for $15 each. Which I thought was a good price. Everyone should check around and see if any vets are offering discounts. |
We live in the D/FW area but these things can spread in ways we never know. Thanks for the heads-up. |
Rabies in Texas They have been prevalent in our area for several years. We've even had a case of rabies in a horse locally. The worse the drought gets, the closer to the human population wild animals and their illnesses get. |

 I'm not sure people truly understand exactly what the consequences are if the government has the slightest concern of a dog having rabies AND also just what would happen if you really did have a rabid dog on your hands and it even got just a little bit of saliva on its owner's cut or scrape. The animal will be euthanized. It's head will be sent to a lab for testing, period. You will undergo treatment or lose your life (and if you didn't know that your dog had rabies, it may be too late). It's REALLY not worth skipping it because some sites on the internet have scary stories about the vaccine. Yes, the vaccine has side effects including death. That's a potential with any drug. That doesn't mean it's okay to skip it. What really gets me is all these indoor/outdoor cats that don't get the vaccine. ...then they come in and the kids play with them! Not safe. And if an owner decides not to vaccine, the animal's vet and their staff is now at risk of disease along with the general public. Please vaccinate and leave the no vaccinating idea to the people whose pets are medically unable to handle it. |
Rabies freaks me out! You may think the threat doesn't concern you because your pet doesn't go outside alone or whatever the reason. However even if your dog NEVER steps foot outside there is always a freakish possibility of them coming into contact. Five years ago, I was sitting in my office of a well maintained office building in the middle of the afternoon when a bat exited the ventilation duct and came down and got me in the back of the head. Unfortunately, they were unable to capture the bat and I was personally stuck with having to go through the series of rabies shots. I am so relieved that they no longer give the shots in the stomach but the shot is supposed to be administered near the bite. Since it was the back of my head they couldn't obviously do that. The first day, it was multiple injections and then every week for like 6 weeks. The shots made me ill about 24-48 hours after I received the injection so I went every Friday afternoon and suffered every Sunday for weeks. Even after going through that, after a human has went through the series, if they come into contact with rabies again, they still have to get more shots. Just not as many. Rabies is not something I play around with because I am the least likely person to ever come in contact with a wild animal!!! |
